We recently connected with Blue Nightmare and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Blue, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Honestly, the most meaningful project I’ve been working on is the one I’m working on right now. It truly represents me plus the stories in which I’m both a character and the author of, and not an embellished version of me & what I’ve been through. It’s real, raw, & uncut. I also realize that there’s a new sense of self that I’ve gained, and I’m more aware now of what I want & confident in truly trusting my gut and going with what I feel is great, no matter if people don’t see the vision at first. As long as I see it, that’s what keeps me going. Plus being unapologetically me.. This next project might not only just represent that, but my evolution in ways that I might not even realize.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Music, art, & the creative side of life was just all around me since I was young, it seems. My dad’s a fashion designer, my mom & brother are music lovers plus I’ll see my mom draw from time to time, etc. I had a chorus teacher in middle school that made me sing for some reason, but wouldn’t make other dudes in the class sing. I remember being in a group with like 5 girls & I was the only guy that had to sing “Treasure” by Bruno Mars for a cafeteria show. I kept thinking to myself “Why am I the only guy here? This is corny, I don’t wanna sing. Can I just play the trumpet or something?” But I guess she saw something in me that I didn’t yet. Soon after, I dabbled in producing in middle school, but then after I heard one of my friend’s beats in middle school, I was almost jealous at how good they sounded to me to be honest; it genuinely made me wanna start doing it more for fun, then eventually in 10th grade, I finally took it serious and Blue Nightmare was born. I have a good idea on what sets me apart from others, but I’d rather hear from others than myself because I can think one thing but another person can think another. But what I think sets me apart is my emphasis to create an experience every time. Some artists I feel just love to put a bunch of songs together & call it a project or album. But how do they connect? Not saying there has to be a concept, but build a world at least a little bit, ya know? Some songs could sound different but if they’re related or connect to one another in some way whether it’s the subject, the sound, transitions in the album, etc, then that’s something the listener would remember more. Not only do I want to make an experience with my music, I strive to do it every time someone meets me in real life now; since nowadays, it’s not only about the music. It’s about YOU as a whole, & I strive to be a better me everyday. What I’m most proud of is my will to get better everyday. Wanna know why? Because it helps me get better.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Don’t expect artists to always be a machine. It’s crazy how people forget that artists are actual people, who have made mistakes, eat, sleep, & need breaks just like everyone else. This goes for other creatives as well.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Long story short, COVID hit while I was getting prepared to finish an EP of mine titled “songsabout…” & the studio wasn’t open for a minute. I didn’t have any equipment to work with because all the good stuff was at the studio. But I told myself & was even told that I have to put out something since I didn’t in a while. So, I made a whole EP that I recorded with my laptop mic titled “Quaranthree” in a month. To this day, people sometimes say it didn’t even sound like I recorded on a laptop mic. So I guess it worked out. I wanted it that bad.
