We were lucky to catch up with Blue Kalamian recently and have shared our conversation below.
Blue, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I started making films because I wanted to tell stories, but I honestly didn’t really know what stories I wanted to tell. By the time I graduated from university, I had a deep interest in geopolitics and the complexities of war and conflict. I didn’t realize how close to home it would hit only a year later.
After Azerbaijan’s unprompted invasion of the historically and ethnically Armenian region of Artsakh in 2020, I found a calling and a purpose that I had never experienced before. I myself am Armenian. I grew up on the stories of my great-grandparents living through the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide. Hearing stories that echoed that of my ancestors in the modern day really shook me and I knew I had found the stories I needed to tell. That’s what drove me to make my film, “Dust Never Settled.”
My mission is to record what is happening to Armenians, document the aggressions of Azerbaijan and Turkey, and shed light on the horrific atrocities of today so that 100 years from now, no one can doubt that they took place. Turkey and their lobbyists still vehemently deny the events that my great-grandparents survived. My great-grandchildren will need only point to the work I and others have done to prove what Armenians are going through now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Blue Kalamian. I am a filmmaker and producer. I seek out stories often not covered by the mainstream press and seek to record human history through my lens. I’m most proud of my most recent film, “Dust Never Settled,” which covers the experiences of Armenians who fought against and survived Azerbaijan’s unprompted invasion in 2020 which continues to this day.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect I think is the affirmation from other people that what you’re doing is important. In today’s world, we are so informed about world events that it makes us feel so helpless. Even doing our best doesn’t seem to fix large social or justice issues. Every little bit of appreciation helps, though. Being told that something you created impacted someone even in a very small way is both comforting and motivating. It makes me excited for the next project and prevents discouragement.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Remaining consistent. If you falter or mess around with things that are not you, people will pick up on that. Remain loyal to yourself and your mission and no one will be able to chip away at you. I’ve found that maintaining consistent reporting, educating, sources of information, and proper dialogue has helped people to find trust in me and believe in what I report.
