We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Blue June. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Blue below.
Hi Blue, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I first began to learn about tarot I wasn’t a true believer. My interest in witchcraft and divination courses was purely academic, or so I thought. But my first teacher saw promise and encouraged me to develop my intuition and I was changed pretty much overnight. From there the job almost found me, I was being referred clients through a local crystal shop and when I built my website it was almost as though I wasn’t the one formatting it, I truthfully don’t remember doing it at all. At the time I was working in film and television in Wardrobe, but it quickly shifted to me becoming a full time reader just based on the amount of clients I was getting. As a former skeptic myself I was able to bring a candor and quantification to things that people really responded to. I still “disappoint” new clients in a first reading by explaining that things are not as predestined as we like to believe and much of what happens to us is based on our own free-will. I am also probably the only psychic on earth that makes sure that my clients are aware that Psychics don’t always get it right. I think that level of honesty has brought me many long term regulars and new clients alike, due to the nature of this business being somewhat cryptic in so many various ways.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The way I like to describe myself as someone who now teaches Tarot is as forever a student myself. There are always ways to expand in this field and always more you can learn. I have plenty of experience teaching large groups of people but now I prefer to take on students one on one. Teaching is not the only lateral service I provide, I also perform Spell Work on behalf of clients for all kinds of various purposes. What sets me apart from other providers of this service is that I diagnose with a tarot reading before hand so we can see what the best approach is and the spell and reading are included in the price of the consultation. One thing I am really proud of is that I am not here to get rich so I think spell work should be affordable, not send someone into debt. I also make it clear that there are never guarantees with readings or magic which is another reason that the price should be accessible to everyone.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the biggest mistakes I have made in my journey through the last decade of reading tarot for a living was paying for advertising. What I now know is that the best clients come from referrals, so I reward people who send me those with discounts. When I paid for advertising I almost destroyed my income to the point that I nearly closed because it had the opposite of the intended effect and I wasn’t getting any clients. It was so expensive to take this risk that I was in major deficit. I took a job serving tables at a restaurant next door to the crystal shop I worked at back then until I got caught back up enough to go back to reading full time. That was about six months enduring many long hours but I am very proud that I was able to get everything back on track and not lose my legacy, and since then I let the universe do my advertising for me.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Aside from word-of-mouth, having a business listing on Yelp and Google has made me extremely searchable. Between that and my SEO management for the website, I feel these are the secondary ways to referrals that have proven successful for Blue June Tarot. I advise anyone getting started to manage these things (for free!) very carefully. I’ve also found that the best way to foster relationships for returning clients is through social media, getting people to follow me on Instagram and updating my stories allows for people to respond to me privately. In this line of work people don’t necessarily want their laundry aired out in feed comments so this is the best way I’ve found to engage my audience and maintain relationships.
