We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blucone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Blucone , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A risk we’ve taken and continue to take is the pursuit of being professional creatives in a world where that life is undervalued and labeled as a “hobby”. We have no hesitations about what we do. We all have day jobs, but our music and will to succeed sustains us. No risk, no reward. We’ve seen the benefits of this risk through the positive response to our music, and through the amazing connections we’ve made within our first year of playing live together.
Blucone , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are a 5-piece indie pop band based in Columbus, OH. Noah (producer) and Innes (bassist) started collaborating musically in 2020 as roommates, with Ben (drummer) joining the fold soon after. Ben knew our singer, Sofi, in high school, so he brought her on board to grace the tracks. The final addition was Nick (guitar); Nick and Ben played in a band together in college so the musical chemistry was natural. Everyone came from different musical foundations, and we were equally motivated to succeed in the music industry. Soon after, we started playing shows around Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati.
Something that sets us apart from others is that we take calculated musical risks. We make music for both the experimentalists and the pop-heads. There is a little something for everyone. You’ll see what we mean if you listen to our currently released tracks (“Torn”, “Open Up”, and “Crazy”). Our newest release, “Reconvene” ft. Ebri Yahole (out 5/12), is no exception.
What we’re most proud of right now is that we are playing the Summer Camp Music Festival later this month. Other artists playing this year include Willie Nelson, Umphrey’s McGee, Les Claypool, Mastodon, Vulfpeck, and Badflower. We wouldn’t have this opportunity without our fans and management (Bertha Hill Music), so we’d like to thank everyone for believing in us and helping us chase our dreams.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for us is simply the process of it all: the songwriting, the camaraderie, connecting with others, playing live, etc.. We are doing what we’ve always wanted to do since we were kids. We hope to make a living off of it someday, but we are just honored to have this experience, wherever it leads. We are having the time of our lives.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society needs to create an environment of respect around artists, and not just the wealthy ones. The artist’s job is to enlighten, entertain, and challenge the consumer. Artists should have more access to the physical space, time, and fair compensation to create.
Society also needs to encourage more creativity in general. People put themselves in a box, denying their ability to do things that don’t “fit” an image. Think of how many people gave up on being artists because of shaming or impostor syndrome. Not everyone has to like each others’ art; one man’s trash is another man’s treasure… but people just need the opportunity to create, whether or not they aim to be one of the greats.
