We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blonde Vanity a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Blonde thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I started performing in drag 8 years ago, frequenting my local gay bars to perform in “open stage” shows. Over the years, I’ve gradually improved my skills in dancing, lip sync, wig styling, jewelry, and costume creation, and I became booked across local venues more frequently as a result. Around a year and a half ago, I made the decision to jump into performing full time, and I’ve been managing my bookings across Columbus ever since! It wasn’t an overnight change for me- my success has come from the hard work and dedication I have to improving my craft, and pushing myself to deliver the most sickening performances I can for my audiences.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Ben Lewis, I’m 25 years old, and I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. My alter-ego is the kicking, splitting, drag queen diva, Blonde Vanity. I’ve been performing in drag for 8 years, going from performing in my bedroom, to opening for Sonja Morgan at the Davidson Theater and headlining Pride events around the state. Audiences can expect jaw dropping performances at my shows, which include my signature gymnastics, comedy, and lip sync skills. I make all my own costumes, style my own wigs, do my own makeup, and even make the larger than life jewelry I wear during my numbers! Everything about my drag persona is an expression of my creativity, the best way to understand it is to come see a show yourself!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve been very blessed to have an active social media presence from the start of my drag career. I credit the size my audience to posting very regularly, engaging with my followers in the comments, and supporting the people that support me! I’ve also had to keep up with the times with social media- a simple selfie doesn’t always cut it anymore.. people want a glimpse into the lives of the performers and people they love, it’s up to us to keep the content engaging and fun!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
At the end of the day, the best way to support your favorite art and artists is to show up for them and the art they create. Every creative starts somewhere, and supporting the art and the artists you love with your money, your attendance, and your attention is the best way to make sure our society stays full of beautiful, diverse art.
