We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Blessing Seaton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Blessing below.
Alright, Blessing thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
What I would change about the educational system is how they don’t teach most of the things we need in the real world. For an example I was fresh out of high school and I didn’t even know anything about credit at all or where to even start to build my credit until my mother sat me down and told me about it. I didn’t even know how to file my taxes or find my own insurance or even take a loan for a car until my mother told me. It’s just crazy how kids are in high school for 4 years and the educational system don’t tell kids about how it really is out in the real world till they see it for themselves. So I would like it, if teachers actually had some sort of class that teaches young children and adults these type of things.
Blessing, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey, my name is Blessing Seaton and I am a 19 years old self taught makeup artist. I was originally born in west Africa in a country named Ivory Coast. Growing up the only black girl in all my classes was really hard because I lived in a predominantly white county in Iowa, so I wanted to stand out. That’s when I started buying makeup in 7th grade at dollar tree and Walgreens and started doing my makeup everyday at school and I didn’t care if I had PE I would still wear it everyday. Fast forward to my sophomore year of high school I moved to a really diverse high school and that’s when I started getting way better in my makeup skills, so then I started doing all my friends makeup for homecoming and other school dances we had and I would call myself “BeatzByBlessing”. I just thought it was a great name since I do makeup for others. The ending of 2021 was when I got my LLC for my business and I even have a small studio in my house where I do everyone’s makeup and I do not discriminate against any race or gender everyone is equally welcomed in my makeup studio. I also started doing this thing where I would make “Touch up kits” for all my clients so they can touch up their makeup when they get out of my seat if they feel like their makeup still needs a couple of hours of show time. I also provide snacks and drinks in my studio because I tend to have what I call “early birds” and they’ll forget to eat so I have that so my clients aren’t hungry throughout their appointment. I genuinely love what I do I pray that it expands to something way bigger than it already is. What I am most proud of would have to be how far I’ve come especially just at 19 years old. I want people to know that I am here to enhance the beauty they already have. I am not here to change anyone’s look I am here to let you know that you were already beautiful before you came into my studio I am just here to enhance your beauty that God already gave you.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media has been the best source of new clients for me. The reason why I say that is because I have 1.2k on instagram and almost. 2k on Tik tok those social medias helped me tremendously because I started posting my work and content and I would tell people where I’m from. They would like my work, but I also have Snapchat which is also a great help in finding new clients because I have a lot of people on that app that really do love my work. So social media is my best source for my new clients and just building my clientele.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
How I built my audience on social media? That’s really a good question, but it’s hard to answer because most of my audience are people from my state or people I went to high school with or just grew up with. Throughout the years though it was just me consistently posting my work and trying to be more out there, so even if my work was bad I’d still share it just because I believed in myself and that I could go along way with my passion. Advice I would give someone who’s just getting into social media is that you don’t have to be scared and don’t let anyone rain on your parade because you’re only on social media to accomplish and make yourself happy not other people. Also do not get too in tune with social media because half of what you see on there is fake, just really be true to yourself and don’t ever compare your work with other people work. Go at your own pace. I had to learn the hard way. Be true to yourself and only yourself always, you’ll go along way.
