We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Blessing Odusola. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Blessing below.
Alright, Blessing thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I never really had an “oh my gosh” moment, it all was a very gradual process. When I started back in Uni with my friends, it was really just something to do with my time to while it away and then it started to get serious once we started posting about it and people started really liking it. Then I started listening to a lot more music and would just get crazy ideas of what I thought they should look like visually. Through dance I was able to translate that art into something I felt and it just flourished from there!

Blessing, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Okay hi! My name is Blessing Odusola and I’m a dancer, choreographer, creative director and model. I got into dance quite randomly in University and it just grew into this creative direction / visual art idea emphasizing the Afro style with influences from dance styles all over. I provide my clients with visual direction, movement coaching, choreography, performances and direction/ creation of visual ideas and concepts. What sets me apart is how I’m able to interpret what I hear into what I feel and eventually into what I can see. I take intangible feelings and turn them into physical forms we can watch. I’m definitely proud of the projects I’ve undertaken this year (2023), it’s been an experimental year for me and I’m extremely grateful to be able to try new things and experiment and see what my brain and body is capable of. I’d love people to know that my brand is all about accepting who you are and what you can at every point in your life. You’re never really a finished product, we’re always a work in progress till the end so working with my brand should feel elevating, encouraging and exciting. The journey is what matters, so we’re enjoying the whole process as it unfolds. Happiness at every point is our goal.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it’s definitely seeing what I imagined in real life. Ranging from choreography on the bodies of other dancers being interpreted as I imagined or a visual exceeding my expectations. It just amazes me every single time. Like wow! God is amazing. For a while growing up, it was very hard to explain my thoughts. I struggled with communicating what I truly wanted and thought. Especially with art. I just was kinda flowing through other people’s idea which was great but it’s especially rewarding when things play out how I pictured it or better!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society right now does give us the space to express depending on what part of society you’re living within. Pertaining to the west, I’d love a situation where we’re taken more seriously in regards to the financial aspect. Realistically we’re using our physical and mental energy to do what we do so we should get paid and addressed accordingly. We are essentially athletes (referring to dancers specifically) with the amount of training and work we do, we need to be treated as such and create a space for upcoming creatives to be able to live off their art as opposed to having to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. So definitely a financially stable environment.
