We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blessing Beam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Blessing, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I first started modeling I had no idea what I was in for. Doing research, traveling, and taking pictures. But the most struggle was doing it alone. Me being one of the first kid in my family to pursue an industry career. Like acting, modeling, and or music. I had to completely do everything for myself. Especially traveling. 2023 brought new opportunities. Like I got to walk in LA Fashion Week and African Fashion Week in Seattle. I’ve been blessed. Just hate being alone. So I guess the risk I’ve taken is leaving the past behind me and pursuing my dreams. As an African-American from Liberia. It’s my dream to be the next model face to inspire the next generation!!
Blessing, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Blessing. I’m Liberian born. I live in Washington State. I’m a model and up becoming influencer. I started in 2020 right after I graduated from high school. I’m currently signed to two agencies: Seattle Talent and IMD inc. I enjoy the opportunities modeling has provided. Like traveling and making connections. I am a photo model and I do actually as well. Furthermore, I enjoy creating clothing content. Building putt and selling some on Depop! My mission is simple: inspire, create, and encourage!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Although, I am not quite where I want to be I’m still growing. As a model/ influencer it’s easy to become full of yourself. For me however I deal with anxiety and depression. Overthinking and feeling overwhelmed. The industry is saturated. Finding your niche isn’t the problem. I find being myself is. Because if you not trending. “Who cares right?” My advice is to be yourself first. There can be one-hundred fake individuals trying to be famous. But there’s only on you. My second advice is to start slow. As slowly as you need. Though tomorrow isn’t promised. There’s no point on rushing and stressing. I’m still learning this lesson as well. My final advice is to be consistent. Again a lesson I’m learning still. No matter what, stay on you’re game. If you not going to finish don’t start it.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Lot of people ask my “how can they start modeling.” For me this is a strange question. Because I’m not a professional model (yet). I’ve only been in a couple fashion shows and photo shoots. But the advice I would give. Is to build relationships and connections. Everyone knows a somebody. And that someone might be your next big break. Treat everyone with respect and kindness. Even if you have 67k followers or been featured on Vogue. We all are humans. That’s one reason I love about modeling. No matter what walk of life you in. You get a chance to present yourself. My second advice would be to build a community. Join a group of like minded people. People in the same industry as you. Connect and get as much information as possible. After all advice is free.
