We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blanca Plata a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Blanca, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was about 5 years old when I saw on public TV an artist show when they were showing a painting tenique that consisted by mixing pigments whit egg yolks…. I was mesmerized about it!
Could not believe my eyes, as time went on and keep watching the show, a sparkle came through then I decided exactly that is what I wanted to do whit my life!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Painting is always my main focus on my art career. Holding a mayor on techniques and materials of all those was my favorite is airbrush, however in my opinion the most difficult of them, been using this technique for 35 years
Love that, very mush you can paint in any surface whit a smooth finish.
Need to back up a little bit here, my mother had a small Beauty salon where she thought me the trade, as a back up to have the means to support my self just in case. Make up was my thing, obviously because involve all the beautiful colors pallets that very much the same ones I use in art school.
Now back to now, since I airbrush and when started whit this path not many people use it on makeup very much that branch of my career tock off.
It was contest for body painting, so figured for sure can do that!
Did my research to get the right band makeup that need to go true the airbrush and studied the competitors.
Did not told anyone my plans, signing in at the last moment,
When I got the first place people was shock since very much nobody knew who I was or where I came from.
Did got first place 2 more times.
This accomplishment open the door to many opportunities to work using my skills principally my airbrush abilities
Working as set decorator
Prop making
Fx make up
Fantasy makeup for performer
Collaboration whit amazing photographer and models.
Painting is my first love.
Producing fine art, portraits, pet portraits, Art sneakers, mural, digital art, always creating something
You never know what is going to come out of my apartment.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It is very discouraging when you a share that desire to become an artist an people sometimes they say well you are going to starve the rest of you’re life ( very much nobody would said that to someone that decide to become an firefighter)
We need to realize that everything around us it was thought by an artistic mine
In my case the more doubt was applied to my decision the more I stick on it at some point to prove them wrong and to drove my self
Someone ask my ones what is your plans B? , I was on my late forties.
Wait a minute is not plan B it is never been and never will!
I’m not going to lie it had been a bumpy ride, but when you act on full excitement things will work out
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
don’t need to please anyone! As longest happy is in what I’m creating that is what mater
As example
why are you painting this you should paint that and will sell
End up doing it and stock whit the pice.
Now if someone ask me why are you painting / creating this instead of that
My answer now is
“ Because I want to” unless you are Commissioning it then my fee is …
Bottom lineIf I love it for sure someone els would do too
