We were lucky to catch up with Blanca Bermúdez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Blanca thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
Being a business owner you are ready for everything business related i believe. I will admit i was ready. However, one thing business owners forget is how much personal life can affect you. For example in a two year span I got separated from a 25 yr relationship, my father passed and my little sister was in a terrible accident that changed her life. It felt like a blink of an eye and everything i knew to be my normal was not. I had to hurt and still manage to push through. I think that was the worst time frame for me and i still had to show up for my clients with a smile. I had to learn to shut off my emotions while i was servicing my clients and give them the 5 star service they deserved. This phase of life helped me to grow as a person and a entrepreneur as most people don’t expect life to change so much on a personal level.
Blanca, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My passion with Make Up started at a very young age, I believe I was 12 years old. I was obsessed with putting make up on my face, even if it was dramatic. I was not self-conscious of doing it on myself as I felt it was an art. I realized I had a talent when my friends would ask me to do their make up or people that I knew started doing their make up like me in school. As time went on, I would be asked by friends and family to do their make up for special events. That’s when I knew that I should make this a career. I ended up working with some pretty amazing companies like Chanel, Lancome, Laura Mercier, and more. After a while, I wanted to challenge my artistry that’s when I looked into permanent make up. I felt this would be a great way to help my clients have my art on a more permanent level. I did this because my clients would consistently ask me if I could go home with them and do their make up every day. I knew that was not realistic and I figured that if I learned a more permanent solution I can help my clients have some of my work on them every day. I took some classes and was trained and certified with permanent Make up. It was such a great investment that led me to leave my job and start my own business. I named it Beautiful You OC and I settled in Newport Beach.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I tent to be very private and have a small circle. So losing someone that was part of that circle which was my Father and also having my little sister endure a terrible accident I was devastated to say the least. It hit me hard but i still had to continue showing up with a smile on my face when i was completely broken. That was the hardest for me, but i continued and kept going because i had to, i didn’t have a choice. This really brought out a strength that i didn’t know i had. I was forced and i grew from it.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivot with my business was when i had to leave a on location business to a travel business for Make Up only. For unexpected reasons i had to shift what i had worked hard build and i had to go mobil. It wasn’t what i envisioned, but it was a blessing in disguise as i no longer had such a high overhead. This was hard but manageable. I do still want to provide my clients with a location again, but i think for now I work with what works. It’s a hard call as you want to have it all, but at times it’s best to let things work and ensure it brings profit. I know Permanent Make Up location will be available again soon, however, I want to make sure my next location is a place i will be content with and it will be in a location I absolutely love.
