We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Blake Yard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Blake below.
Blake, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My photo career has gone in many different arch’s over the last 10+ years, but photography started for me just documenting things I saw when out biking with friends whether It was catching Tricks that were happening or just the general energy of the scene around me. After a few years it morphed into shooting concerts for fun to getting paid to shoot bands and their promo materials. Recently I have taken more of a step back from commercial photography and gone more back to my roots with a series of photos I’ve been taking called “FROMTHESADDLE” these have been raw in the moment photos while out cycling and I plan to assemble everything into a series of photo books over the coming year.
Blake, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Cameras and Bikes have always been a constant in my life no matter where I travel, or live I always have one or the other on me and a lot of the time both! I spent several years doing concert photography around metro-Detroit and it really introduced me to a lot of inspiring photographers and musicians.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Gear doesn’t matter. Having experienced lots of different cameras and mediums over the years and being so focused on having the greatest camera for years it really set in once I started shooting with this really cheap 35mm slr and got hooked on film, I “upgraded” to a much more expensive SLR only to find the images were almost always worse because the camera was packed with to many features to simply make the camera enjoyable or productive in fast paced situations like a concert or shooting a trick.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like any creative out there I’ve experienced ruts or poor mental states where creating is difficult or feels impossible. The recent break from that rut and feeling better in a process was simply diving into a new style altogether. Diving into this style I embraced letting the camera do its job and just focusing on composition and movement in the image.
