We were lucky to catch up with Blake Priebe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Blake, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Risk-taking is a common aspect of being a full-time real estate investor. However, one of the biggest risks I took was committing to becoming a business owner and real estate investor in the first place. I had opportunities to pursue athletics, modeling/acting, or work in a corporate setting with a steady income and benefits. Yet, by the time I graduated college, I chose to set those paths aside and pursue my own business despite obtaining the degree. At the time, I really wasn’t making much money outside of what I could pull in from side hustles. I watched several friends move to new cities with awesome job opportunities and great starting salaries, while I moved back home to my moms basement (which I am incredibly grateful for), with no serious income.
I made the decision to take that risk for many reasons. One prominent one was that it most closely aligned with my vision from when I was younger of being able to build a business and work with friends to obtain financial independence and freedom to travel. Did I know how that would be feasible? Not really. But years later, I am living that reality. I own a beautiful home, run a growing business with one of my best friends, and have the freedom to travel frequently. I’m financially independent and now have the opportunity to help my family achieve the same. It hasn’t been an easy journey, and there are still moments when I wonder how a different path might have turned out. But I hope this can inspire others to take risks on themselves and pursue their own vision.

Blake, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Most of my life growing up was dedicated to competitive sports. This gave me the foundation of being disciplined, hard working, and competitive, which I believe positively influenced my opportunities for success in both business and life. I always knew I wanted to be in business and work for myself, but figuring out what that actually looked like was a challenge. I explored many different opportunities, but the business that really brought us to where we are now started when I was a student at the University of Kansas. A close friend introduced me to the concept of buying and selling luxury watches which we turned into a full-time side hustle while juggling our studies in business finance and marketing.
By the time we graduated, we made the risky decision to go full-time with the watch business, declining corporate job offers despite our degrees. It wasn’t long before we connected with a repeat client who introduced us to real estate. After researching the industry, I saw many similarities between the strategies used in watch trading and real estate. We applied the skills we gained from our watch business to real estate and found tremendous potential. We were incredibly dedicated and consistent with our efforts and that is the basis for how I got into the real estate industry.
At BC Properties KC, we focus on fix and flips, wholesale, and building a portfolio of rentals. The opportunities we pursue are primarily single family and multifamily residential properties in the Kansa City metro and surrounding areas. Our clients range from homeowners looking to sell, to individuals seeking affordable housing, and other investors looking for solid returns. What really sets us apart is how we build positive and fun relationships with our clients. We also operate with a service mentality and are able to utilize various strategies that serve the clients needs. We take the time to understand each homeowner’s unique needs and offer tailored solutions to fit their situation. When working with investors, especially our private lenders, we focus on building trust and delivering low-risk, high-return opportunities. I’m incredibly proud of our successful track record and the long-term business relationships we’ve built along the way.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being a business owner requires a great deal of resilience. Here’s a condensed version of a story that truly tested ours with some construction projects. A friend referred us to a family member of his in contracting, who saw our work and was eager to collaborate. After reviewing a few upcoming opportunities, they provided quotes for us to consider. Something to keep in mind is that we already had established, trusted contractor relationships. However, given the referral was a family member of a very close friend, we decided to give the new relationship a chance.
We assigned them to several projects in our pipeline, but to get straight to the point—they did not go well. At all. Missed timelines, missed budgets, poor-quality work, and they didn’t pull necessary permits as promised. I will admit we had our faults. However, we were repeatedly misled and given false information, which only made things worse. It also didn’t help that they took no accountability, but ultimately, we only had ourselves to blame. As the property owners, we were left fully responsible for the mess. It took over a year to clean up and resulted in very significant losses.
This experience was not only financially draining but mentally exhausting as well. We took full ownership for the mistakes we made, overcame the challenges, and ultimately came out stronger. The lessons we learned from that experience were invaluable, pushing us to grow and improve. The following year, we doubled both our revenue and our portfolio—and we continue to build on that momentum today.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
A major aspect of building our reputation in our market is who we are as individuals as well as how we do business. We take care of the people we work with and we strive to operate with integrity. We regularly ask for feedback from companies we do business with and make adjustments to strengthen those relationships.
Another main aspect to helping us build a solid reputation in our market is delivering results and getting deals done. We do what we say we are going to do. Our main focus from day one has always been prioritizing long term relationships and having a service mentality.
