We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Black Magic Drumline a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Black Magic Drumline thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Black Magic drumline was the idea of college classmates that attended Xavier University. There the drumline was known as “X-factor.” X-factor Drumline performed at various events at the school and around the city. Realizing the popularity of the drumline, it was renamed “Black Magic” in 2013. Black Magic has performed all over the country in various performances and festivals including SXSW, Bonnaroo, Essence and others.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Each member of the drumline has a music background before the line was formed. This includes marching band in high school, church musicians, djs, dance, and other creative activities.
We offer music services (drumline, band, fitness, music lessons, etc.)
What sets apart is being a performing drumline which is unique in itself. We play instruments, chant, dance and give an entire experience that last.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an creative is the supporters and fans. We love their energy when we perform. They show up to support us when we are performing. The pictures, compliments, and other pleasantries are what makes this journey rewarding.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can support artists/creative in various ways. As simple as a like, follow or share on social media can be a step in the right direction. Constructive feedback, offering a helping hand sometimes, and other things that can show support. Yes, money is good but not the only form of support. Working with creatives can be a positive aspect that builds that ecosystem where creativity can thrive.
