We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Black Benji a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Black thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I taught myself the craft by observing others. I wish I invested in the craft earlier because that would’ve definitely sped up the process.The only thing that stood in my way was me. The master skill that I’m thankful to have learn is engineering my own music.
Black , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
What a lot of people don’t understand is that I’m self made. My inspiration comes from my everyday life, and that is what helps me to become a great artist. What sets me apart from other is that I won’t let any obstacle stop me from elevating, if there’s an obstacle that needs to be dealt with, I’m going to handle it and not run from it. I’m proud to see that what I’ve built is becoming more of an inspirational brand. It allows others to realize that you can accomplish anything as long as you stay consistent.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was just because someone says they support you, doesn’t mean they actually do. Trust no one that doesn’t show actions behind their support. I’ve had so many people telling me that they rock with me and wanted to see me win but they weren’t doing anything to help me win. Action always speak louder than words.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing my supporters/fans respond to the music in a heartfelt way.
