We recently connected with Biz LaChance and have shared our conversation below.
Biz, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I’ve thought of this often as of recently. “Everyone moves at their own pace,” sounds cliche, but it really is true. Many independent artists, be they musicians, visual artists, or filmmakers use their past experiences (or lives, if you will) to help them navigate and pull resources from to be successful. Starting when I did (28/29 years old) ensured that I was capable of having an array of jobs, and investing time into my family. Had I started earlier on, it’s quite possible that if I had not found success in the ways I was capable of now, it would have discouraged me. Stability is key when working freelance independently.
Biz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Biz LaChance and I’m an actor and filmmaker. In the past I’ve written a novel, hosted a podcast or two, had my time in the corporate world and now do my best to remain consistent in this industry of film I know live within. My brand is passion. With every project I go into it feeling just as passionate about it as the creators. I love the work that I do, and it shows. Since learning the equipment used and the ‘tricks of the trade,’ I’e recently considered investing the time and money to start a small production company. I’m told that I can be “too forward” but in reality, I like connecting with people and I love bonding over the stories that make us who we are.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media presence started back when instagram was younnnng. Back in 2012 maybe. Back before we used filters on EVERYTHING. I worked for a technology company and like exploring apps in my downtime. I spent time using the photo enhancing and editing apps. People liked them enough that they decided to follow. As of recently, in the last year or so I had a few viral videos, just being silly that gained me more followers. The best thing I can offer for advice is to engage with your audience and remember that your social media is your brand when you’re being a creative artist. People that don’y know you and that might want to, have this as a means of viewing YOU being you.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The hardest part I think people struggle to understand is that creatives have an un-scratchable itch to either tell their story, or bring someone else’s story to life. We all want to be heard and know that we are validated in how we feel. Being connected through shared experience is a great way of doing that. Be it working on a team to bring someone’s vision to life, or telling your own story through your craft so that people can view the world as you see it; if only for a moment, you can feel that sense of understanding so many of us are aiming for.
