We recently connected with Bishop Daniels and have shared our conversation below.
Bishop, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
As a business owner in the fitness (health & wellness) industry, I’ve played every role their is. I started off pretty much interning for another business owner/trainer. While learning the ins and outs of the business it immediately put me in the mindset of becoming a business owner and creating a better path for myself and others. I’ve only ever had two jobs in my life before becoming a trainer, Assistant director at a community center and Playing basketball professionally. Those jobs allowed me free range to be active and involved in something, so with that being the concept of me working a regular job outside of that didn’t sit well for me especially anything inside of my degrees. Every day is a different battle when it comes to being a business owner. I’m constantly learning and growing, but I’m happier then ever now. Being able to do what I love to do, while learning and watching things grow excites me. Any thought about me being a business owner is never about what if or going back, its about what space I’m currently in and how I can improve. My mind is racing, and the urge to be great stops me from having the doubts of what I do and who I am.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been working out all my life because of basketball. When I went to college to play, I fell in love with the process of getting better. Pushing myself every day to become a better player was my motivation, but I also started to like the physical transformation I could see after weeks of training. After a few years of playing professional basketball, the wear and tear on my body started to kick in, and I had a major injury. At that moment, I had to decide to either keep playing or give it up. So, as I was rehabbing, my trainer allowed me to help him with some of his clients. At this point, I realized that I loved helping reach their goals, so I decided that I wanted to have my facility that has everything that people need to excel in their physical and mental goals. As of right now, I have opened a fitness studio that can assist anyone. The ultimate goal is to help, encourage, and build as many people as we can.
I started a fitness business in the middle of a pandemic. It hasn’t been the most ideal situation but it’s coming along. As much as I’ve learned about business from my parents and other people it’s still not the same as going through it yourself. I’ve had to learn everything through trial and error, which I’m perfectly fine with. I’ve worked every day, long hours just to make sure everything is running correctly. I’ve set multiple goals, but I believe in the process I’m in no rush. Learning along the way is the biggest thing for me.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve played basketball all my life, with having dreams of playing at the biggest level that didn’t happen for me. While still making progress and being successful, injuries became my downfall. Basketball was something I’ve relied on my whole life so when my body forced me to shut it down, mentally i wasn’t ready. At this point in life I had to search and find what my purpose was. Luckily I’ve had my parents help me along the way because I didn’t have no clue what it was that I wanted to do, so the balance between get your shit together and helping me do that guided me into finding something that I really loved and transition that into a business. So with that being said the biggest pivot in my life, took me out of a dark place and help me become a thriving business owner and still growing and getting bigger.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not expect yourself out of anyone else and never take anything personal. I deal with people everyday, a million different personalities. Everybody thinks and moves differently, and we never know what people are going through so for me it was learning to be patient and understanding.
I had a client who was having personal problems at home, which I didn’t know or couldn’t recognize there was a problem. So my delivery towards that client was normal but a bit much for that person at that time. Which caused a little riff between us at that moment. Being that I try not to display anything negative towards my clients I had to step back and look at what i was doing and correct it. I then had a conversation with that client and let them know to communicate with me so that I can be more understanding to what their reason could be for their responses or actions.
