We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Birgit Devae a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Birgit, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Finding success is truly about determination, not giving up, and trusting your vision. I began my photography journey on the other side of the camera when I started modeling as a child. I was always amazed at the artistry of the photographers I worked with and how they could see the beauty and create art in any situation.
When I switched sides and picked up a camera, my vision of the world changed. I started seeing the magic in all of those little in between moments. I have faced setbacks for sure, but no matter what has happened – maybe a missed shot, harsh criticism, or feeling creatively stuck – I took each moment as an opportunity to learn and grow. My biggest piece of advice is to always keep pushing forward! The photographers who find success and are constantly inspiring me are those who don’t give up, who hustle through the tough times, and who are continually evolving. Determination is what turns passion into progress, and that’s where it all happens.
I think every photographer has probably dealt with imposter syndrome at one time or another. It is easy to get lost trying to please others and follow the latest trends. Those who trust their own vision and aren’t afraid to stand out become the trend setters and difference makers. Your perspective is unique, and that’s your superpower. No one else will ever see the world like you! When you follow your gut and shoot from the heart, that’s when your work truly shines.
The most important lessons often come from just getting out there, shooting, and trusting your own creative process. Stay open, stay humble, keep pushing yourself, and always let your gut guide you. That’s when true success comes!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Photography has always been a part of who I am. I started off modeling in front of the camera when I was younger, and moved behind the lens as I grew up. After launching my first business, a children’s clothing brand called Johnny Banana Co, I completely immersed myself in the world of photography. I always dreamed of doing my own product shoots, but along the way, I realized how much I loved capturing people, memories and moments.
My family means everything to me, and I never want to forget the beautiful, messy, chaotic moments we experience together. Life goes way too fast, but photography helps to slow it down. It lets us freeze those little moments in time, so we can relive the magic again and again. I’m here for all of those moments!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most important and fulfilling part of being a photographer is getting to show my clients how beautiful their lives are. Whether it is a couple starting their lives together during their engagement and wedding, a family in the midst of the chaos of littles, or a mom celebrating pregnancy and bringing home a newborn. In the moment, life can feel stressful, but looking back these moments will become the good old days. Getting to document and capture these times and show my clients how beautiful their lives are, even in the midst of chaos, fills my soul and brings me so much joy!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The biggest resource you have is yourself! Inspiration exists everywhere, whether it be social media, art, people you pass on the street, or where you imagination takes you. Find what inspires you and lean in, your vision and view is unlike anyone else and is what makes you unique!
