We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Birdie Nichols a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Birdie, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The stage has always been my good friend, a place where I could express myself, let go of any inhibitions, and embrace the joy of creativity. From an early age, I discovered that performing was my natural language, and I began my journey into the world of performance when I was just three years old. I started singing in children’s choir, dancing ballet, and performing in church and preschool events, each experience fueling my passion and confidence. As a young child, I felt an innate connection to the art of expression through movement, sound, and storytelling, which has stayed with me throughout my life.
Growing up, I was also deeply inspired by attending symphonies, operas, and ballets. The rich, intricate performances of these artistic forms opened my eyes to the power of stagecraft and the beauty of collective creative energy. Watching musicians, dancers, and vocalists perform brought a sense of awe and wonder, and it made me realize that the stage was not just a place for performance but also a place for connection — between the artist and the audience, between emotion and expression, between dreams and reality.
At the age of six, I expanded my artistic horizon beyond performing when I began painting birdhouses to sell at a summer weekly art fair in Maine. This was an important milestone in my creative journey, as it taught me the value of creating something tangible and sharing it with others. Selling my hand-painted birdhouses gave me a sense of accomplishment and pride. It also showed me the importance of being able to express my creativity in various forms, whether on stage, through music or dance, or through visual art. These experiences reinforced the belief that creativity is a constant thread that connects all aspects of my life.
When I am given the time and space to express myself creatively, I feel at home. There’s a sense of comfort and peace that comes with the freedom to create, perform, and share art with others. The stage has always been more than just a platform for me; it has been a trusted friend, a place where I can find my voice, tell my story, and connect with others in a profound and meaningful way. Whether I’m performing in front of an audience or simply creating something with my hands, I feel most alive when I am engaged in the act of creation. It is in these moments of artistic expression that I truly feel like myself.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the profound connection you create with others. For me, it’s hearing how my music has moved someone or touched them on a personal level. Knowing that something I’ve poured my heart into can resonate deeply with others, evoking emotions or memories, is what makes the creative journey truly fulfilling.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a creative, my path often looks different from the more traditional or conventional career routes, and that’s perfectly okay. Creativity doesn’t follow a straight line; it’s full of twists, turns, and moments of uncertainty. Unlike a 9-to-5 job with clear milestones and deadlines, being a creative means navigating through periods of self-doubt, experimenting with new ideas, and constantly evolving. While this journey can seem unpredictable or even chaotic to those who don’t share the same path, it’s important to understand that creativity thrives in those very spaces of uncertainty and exploration. There may be setbacks or non-linear progress, but each step—whether big or small—contributes to a larger picture that eventually unfolds in ways that only the creative can truly appreciate. The process itself is as valuable as the outcome, and that uniqueness is not only valid but necessary for growth and innovation.
