We recently connected with Bird Alley and have shared our conversation below.
Bird, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
“The Veil” is our first album, containing 9 tracks of different styles and emotions, telling a story like no other. We worked on it for 4 years, collaborating with different musical and visual artists, building many friendships along the way. This was our first major accomplishment in our life, something we dreamed of and worked hard on for many years.
The story of the album starts with two birds, Robin and Pigeon, trapped in a limbo of emptiness, creating songs to paint their emotions. Things start to look up for the Birds, but midway through their journey, they realize they had been living in blissful ignorance. It was time to face reality, stepping through the Veil into a word filled with struggles and hardship. The story darkens as the Birds their demons and accept the truth. In the end, their journey brings them to the truth, happiness is worth the fight. With their newfound freedom, they fly to boundless heights.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are Bird Alley, a mysterious bird-humanoid duo consisting of the reserved and cool Pigeon, and wild and adventurous Robin. We write music that ranges from lofi-rock to progressive electronic. The main thing that ties our songs together is their ability to tell an emotional story with few or no words.
Our first album “The Veil” holds a diverse range of musical emotions and textures, telling a story through the evolving sounds. “2:34 AM” and “Eclipse” are especially noteworthy as they have lyrics while the rest of the album is instrumental. Yet, our instrumentals tell powerful stories without words, with songs like “Below Trees,” and “Cavern” as fan-favorites.
Our strangest and experimental track “(Un)veiled” holds the key to unlocking the secrets of our album. Like stepping through the matrix, our album tells the story of facing the truth, and accepting a new future. Our Birds have left the nest, and now its time to fly… will you join us along our journey?
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Our album started on the basis of resilience, at the start of the Covid Pandemic. Pigeon and Robin were high-school friends and neighbors, who had tried to make music together previously but never finished a song. Robin was soon to move far away, and we new we had to finish a song quickly. We agreed lofi music would be easy and fun to make, and was different enough from our regular music tastes where we would have to equally work and learn together to succeed. The 2:34 AM instrumental was finished in a single night, at 2:34 AM in the morning, marking our first completely finished track.
We had the same success with Below Trees later that month, then Robin moved, putting Bird Alley in a long distance relationship. The rest of the album was written between two members 700 miles apart. With the nature of our intricate songwriting, every song felt like it would never be finished, but through our love of music and commitment to the songs, we painstakingly finished each track, taking them as far as we could. In the end after 4 years of writing, we surprised ourselves, learning we had resilience we never could’ve dreamed of.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Creating music and sharing it is a form of self-expression like no other. You can share a piece of yourself with others in a vulnerable, yet rewarding way that has only led to greater relationships in our lives. We had many friends and family members who supported and rooted for us every step along the way, pushing us when we had little hope left. The most rewarding thing to us is when others tell us they were inspired by our work to finish their own, whether it be music, art, or any goals in life. We believe the heart of any great work was inspired, and inspires, and we’re glad if we can even a spark of hope.
Additionally, every creative work turns into a journey, reflective of our feelings and relationships, to ourselves, others and to the world. Looking back on your creative work helps you see yourself from a new perspective, like a time capsule of dreams that came true. Every sound, riff, chord, rhythm, and song has a story that it tells you, every time you listen.
