We were lucky to catch up with Billy Rivera recently and have shared our conversation below.

Billy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?

About a year after accepting Christ as my Savior and walking in His ways, He called my wife and I to administer an online ministry. Our ministry is called Him + Us Ministry and our purpose (God’s design or vision) is to evangelize, educate and provide a judgement-free zone for christians and non-christians; to learn about God’s word and promises. We talk about stuff that typically (in a temple/church setting) it’s hard to talk about or the space is not entirely provided to do so. From this, we also created a Podcast called “Desde la Sala” (spanish for From the Living Room). Basically, we share and talk about the word of God in an open way, as if you were talking to your friends and/or family in your living room. Many people, won’t go to a church setting because they have previously been hurt or feel that they will be judged by going… we provide the ability of people listening from their home and at the same time, most likely, share with whomever is next to them. Our motto is: We Are Called to be One. We believe that we are many different churches, ministries, people but that in Him (God) we are one. Therefore, we strongly believe in colaborating with different pastors, ministers, artists, etc. to ultimately in unison praise and honor God.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is Billy J. Rivera Meléndez (Billy Javy) and I’m 33 years old. I was a self proclaimed atheist that tried to make music and live my life by my own means and way… but I continued to fail. In 2016, I was woken up by a dream (vision) of God and felt the need to go to Church. That same day, I accepted Christ and have not looked back since. From there, God aligned my life, opened doors for me career wise, I got married, have a child and recently started making music again. I make Christian Reggeaton (Urban) Music as this is the genre that I mostly enjoy. Additionally, I feel the calling of correcting a type of music that usually is overlooked because, outside of church or “in the secular world”, this genre speaks heavily about sex, drugs and profanity. I want to be a positive influence in this genre where people that are in and outside of church can enjoy it.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

Definitely God and His unconditional love for us despite the many times we may fail. However, I am moved by being able to collaborate with different people and learn from each other. Working together to ensure that God is known anywhere and everywhere unified as One Unit. Like I said before, I also want to be a positive influence in the genre that I make music in and being able to be a bridge for others

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.

The fact that I don’t want to limit my music for Christians is sometimes very hard to understand for people. By us limiting or creativity as Christians, we are ultimately limiting the Power of God and His word. In a way, we are saying “God can’t go beyond the 4 walls of this temple or event”… I believe in taking what He has confided in me, beyond a place. As I previously mentioned, some people will unfortunately not come into a church but Jesus taught us that WE ARE THE CHURCH. Therefore, wherever I go, I am representing Him; whether I’m in church or at the movies… Also, for those of you that may have been hurt or disappointed by the church: keep your focus on Jesus. He loves you and wants you to understand that its not about them it’s about the relationship you have with Him.
