We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Billy Munoz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Billy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
So I play in a Ska/Reggae band prominently called The Skatastrophics, but I did write a rock and roll album with a project I started called The Riptide Phantoms, It started, pretty much in bed recovering from a major back surgery I bought an acoustic guitar and acoustic bass from Amazon, and just pretty much wrote everything out in bed it was definitely a different experience writing an album in those conditions, but it was definitely a good way to take my mind off of what I was going through so that’s why the project was so meaningful to me.
Billy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well I’m the lead vocalist and baritone saxophone player for a band called The Skatastrophics from Houston Texas, I guess the way I got into the industry would be just getting together with my friends writing tunes and hitting the local venues and bar scene and playing around town, and through that work and consistency I’ve had a lot of opportunities to play with legendary bands that came before me, I’m proud anytime I should have stage with bands like that such as The Skatalites,Lee Scratch Perry,The English Beat, and many more, I guess what I’d like people to know about our band is that yes we do play ska but we definitely have a Tex-Mex influence provide to our sound that I can hear.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
A couple of things of course a great response from the crowd at a live show we play, but even more for me personally is hearing that mixed and mastered completed song after putting in the work in the studio.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
No particular goal of mission necessarily, just writing, recording and performing music just feels as natural as breathing to me.
