We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Billy Mick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Billy, thanks for joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I worked with the entertainment creative team at Universal Studios in Orlando for a very long time. It was the perfect training ground! In theme park entertainment, it’s not “the show must go on” it’s “the show WILL go on”
I have carried that with me everywhere! It’s great to be able to turn on a dime, and make a show happen.
Also, I got to work on a lot of film shoots during my time there and learned how to really make stuff happen with nothing!
Now when my husband and I do a music video, we oversee every aspect of it. I’m very thankful for my time at Universal, I am a better performer and more resourceful created because of it!
Billy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a gay singer songwriter in Orlando! I released my first single in July of 2019 and my debut album in June of 2020!
My second album “Leveling Up” came out in February of 2022 and I have 7 songs recorded for a third album.
For the last year I have hosted my own Variety Show in and around Orlando, showcasing local talent!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly, doing my Variety Show! When I worked as a Show Director for different projects at theme parks, I developed a great love of bringing out the best in performers!
Now with my Variety Show, I’m able to showcase those talents and watch these talented humans blossom! I love sharing the stage with talented folks!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had released my first single in July of 2019 and started performing different places. I then booked a couple of upcoming Prides and other appearances that all got canceled due to Covid.
So I hopped on the virtual shows with the Drag Queens!
It was great, I did a 15 minute set every Saturday night for about 6 months! It was wonderful to still be performing and getting that experience!
