We were lucky to catch up with Billy McKay recently and have shared our conversation below.
Billy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
One of my first paintings was sold to a super nice guy named Sam. Sam would pop in to my monthly art shows from time to time and say hi. One day he brought a friend of his who owned a chain of Coffee Houses in the Cleveland area. Sam asked his friend if he would show my work at one of his trendy locations. His friend showed my work and shockingly gave me 100% of the profits for work sold. Not only that, but I have since received numerous orders from different art fans who originally saw me in that Location. It’s amazing how one act of kindness can snowball. I am so appreciative for support like that.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been creating artwork ever since I was in grade school. After acquiring a degree in art, I went on to help run my family’s local printing business. It was here that I learned graphic design and different print application skills. My time in the printing industry led to many years of exciting work and successful relationships with hundreds of area businesses. Even though it was a small/medium size business, we were able to sell it a few years back before covid started. At that point I decided to use lots of my spare time to paint and get serious about art. I combine my love of monsters, toys, and 80’s pop culture into my current line of 18″x24″ paintings. Currently if you can’t afford an original, you can buy a matted or framed print for just $20.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
You have to do what you love as an artist. It’s really hard to enjoy creating something with the sole purpose of trying to please others. You have to like what you are doing for yourself first. When I started painting my absurd and strange art, I really had no idea if people would like it. Once I found out that they did, it just encouraged me so much. It’s the driving force that keeps me going!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
When an artist creates something, a kind word goes a lot farther than money. I am so happy when people stop and tell me how much they enjoy my work, even if they don’t buy anything! Sure sales are great, but being encouraged by people is just as important as getting paid.
