We were lucky to catch up with Billy Guan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Billy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
I am a firm believer that Wealth Preservation and Asset Protection is much more important than Chasing Rates of Return.
Most people are looking for the most amount of returns for the assets but they neglect keeping the assets they already have and end up over-extending themselves when the market is not in their favor. Time is our only finite asset, and when people hit a certain age…they simply do not have time to wait for their money to “bounce back” with the market.
My goal is to help people build wealth permanently utilizing strategies that wealthy people use to create Generational Wealth.
In a changing market environment, such as what we are currently living in, it is very important to understand how money works and how wealth is built and maintained. Social Media Influencers will tell inexperienced investors to keep dumping their hard earned cash into things that may not necessarily recuperate any of the losses during this market downturn.
The strategy that I teach my clients is to never lose money in the first place so that when the market does look better, they are able to compound their wealth a lot more efficiently rather than having to recuperate the losses when the market recovers and play catch up.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Billy Guan. I am a Financial Coach and Broker. I have been working in this field for the last seven years and it has been the best ride of my life. I got into this line of work because one of my business mentors asked me if I knew anything about finances when I came out of college. I was a broke college graduate with no financial direction and my business mentor sat me down and asked me if I was doing anything for Retirement planning because I was getting to a point in my life where I needed to start planning ahead. I was obviously very ill-prepared during that time and so my mentor basically sat me down and taught me the strategies that wealthy people used to grow their finances.
I was very blown away by what I saw and because I trusted him and his judgment, I decided that I wanted to pursue this line of work because I saw the potential for helping a lot of people learn about finance education. I studied for the qualifications and got licensed by the state shortly afterwards. I am now licensed all across the United States.
My background was in entertainment and sales, I used to be a performing Magician and I transitioned into Real Estate sales for a little bit and learned a lot of valuable lessons. Through using all the interpersonal skills from my previous ventures, I was able to make my career pivot very seamlessly.
The work that I do in Financial planning help clients solve their financial woes. I help clients create a sense of financial awareness by working together on their debts, creating money saving plans, build up their credit scores, create tax advantaged retirement strategies, market-proofing investments by protecting their assets from market downturns, and estate planning. I have a team of Financial Professionals that I work with closely that handle every facet of Financial Planning such as Taxes, Investments, Estate Plans, Mortgages, and Credit Repair.
The thing that I am proudest about my work is getting messages from clients that say because they started working together with me, they are able to have thriving savings and retirement accounts when they were not able to before. I want to be able to help people change the course of their Financial trajectories just because they were able to work together with me and my team.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I am very transparent with how I operate with my clients. I am always respectful, sincere, kind, and non-judgmental with everyone that I work with. Everyone has a battle they are going through, especially when it is regarding their finances, so the last thing the client need is a judgmental advisor making them second guess everything they do with their money. My job is to help people elevate their finances so I work from a position of teaching people financial skills that can be used to get people to the next level.
Because of how I conduct business, I have been very fortunate to develop good relationships with business partners, referrals, and clients. They in turn refer me to other prospective clients because they have had a good experience working together with me. It has been a very interesting journey meeting different clients because I would have never thought I would be working with such a diverse group of professionals. I work with Business owners, Grammy winning musicians, Entertainers, Models, Dancers, Lawyers, and everything in between.
My reputation is built and spreads through word of mouth, so I make it a tenet in my business to make sure everyone feels like they are taken care of when they work with me.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Call it serendipity or fate or blind luck, but I actually learned of my business mentor before I met him in person many years later. Back when I was in high school, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life when I got into college. So I was looking on Myspace at the time and I came across a page of a successful entrepreneur and I got very intrigued by what his page showed but I ultimately put that on the back burner.
Many years later after I graduated college, I went to a networking event and I saw my would-be mentor featured in a spread for Success Magazine. So I started to learn about him and got connected with his business project at the time. I learned that he was the same person that I saw on Myspace all those years back. We started working together on a business project for a couple years, and once that concluded he talked to me about working in the Financial Services industry. He showed me the ins and outs of how wealthy people invest money and I saw a really big opportunity there to teach clients so I started studying and got licensed shortly afterwards.
Through all the ups and downs in business, we have developed a really good relationship and I consider him one of my closest friends.
Funny how life works.
