We recently connected with Billy Gaines and have shared our conversation below.

Billy , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

I was 17 years old when I knew I was to pursue a career in music. I had become a Christian at the age of 16 and after seeking God’s purpose of my life and He revealed to me that He wanted me to use my musical gift.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

In my senior year of high school I was determined to become a mechanical engineer, but in the process I got involved in music and a few very influential people in my life caused me to realize that I had a gift and that I should use it so I ended up going to school for for music composition and Theory instead. After a year I was certain that what I needed to do was to go straight into performing and recording that began the process of forming a group called Living Sacrifice. We recorded a demo that ended up in the hands of people in the music industry. We signed a recorsing contract with Benson records, and released five albums on Benson records and one with Warner Brothers records.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

I was 17 years old when I sat on my journey to become a recording artist. In my mind I that it would probably be one year later when I was 18 years old. However I did not finally sign a contract and record a record until I was 30 years old. That 13 year period was one that required daily practice, daily persistence, and belief moving forward in the calling that was on my life.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

For most rewarding thing for me is to know that I am positively affecting people with the gift that God has given me whether it is an entertainment with beautiful love songs or draw people together or whether it is Gospel songs that preach the gospel Jesus Christ it is to use the gift that I’ve been given and put on this Earth for.
