We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Billy Byrd Sr.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Billy below.
Billy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue my artistic path when I was bout 8 or 9 years old, when me, my brother and friend went to our community center to try out for a talent show. My brother and friend got cold feet right before the audition so I auditioned (sang) by myself and we were picked to be in the talent show. That audition was the beginning which sparked my pursuit to my music career.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Billy Byrd Sr:
Billy Byrd was born William E. Byrd on July 13th, 1972 in Kansas City, Mo. He grew up in a loving household with 4 brothers, 5 sisters, and both of his parents. Billy Byrd Sr. never intended to start writing songs filled with uplifted praises to God, nor did he ever think that he’d be singing in the ardor of Christ and living a committed life to Him or teaching about His awesome ways, delivering his message of hope from a pulpit. But that’s exactly where his path has led him. Having an R&B music foundation, life took him down a path that led him deep down in the valley. Thankfully, he came out on the mountaintop when he found Christ and in doing so, he found his true calling, Urban Praise. His soon-to-be-released album, “I Trust You” is an urban track-driven testament to his deep love and gratitude for being chosen to serve God, first with his life and then in music ministry. More than anything, Billy hopes that he can be a beacon of light that will reach as far back as the streets that were, at one time, commonplace in his life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to push the gospel that it may reach the nation of believers and non believers. My mission is to use my gifts and talents through music, teaching, preaching, donating (food & clothes) to serve our communities.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a gospel music artist is more than just a profession; it is a calling and a ministry. I feel blessed to be able to use my voice and talents to praise God and share His message of love and salvation with the world. Gospel music is not only a powerful expression of faith, but also a rich and diverse musical tradition that has influenced many genres and cultures. I am honored to be part of this legacy and to learn from the great gospel singers who came before me. The most rewarding aspect of being a gospel music artist is seeing how my songs can touch people’s hearts, uplift their spirits, and inspire them to live a better life. There is no greater joy than knowing that I am fulfilling God’s purpose for me and making a positive difference in the world through my music
