We recently connected with Billie Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Billie, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I became a mentor a few years ago to other hairstylists, that I work with. It’s always been a passion of mine to help people who struggle to make money in the hair industry! I’m very good at finding solutions to problems that new hairstylist make as far as their struggle with making money, and building a sustainable clientele! I enjoy teaching people all that I’ve learned Over the years!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
1. How I got into the hair industry?
I started doing hair at the age of 9! I hated the way my hair looked all the time as a child so I started doing my own hair and I was really good at it. I started doing my friends hair in high school and when I graduated high school I went to college for one semester got pregnant with my son and then had to get a job! Got fired from my job by the grace of God lol then went on to hair school! Graduated in one year and then got my first job as a commission stylist. 16 years later and here we are.
2. What type of products/services do I provide?
I provide natural hair care services, I specialize in Locs, blowouts and color! I also have an online clothing boutique!
3. What problems do I solve for my clients, what sets me apart?
I really care about people and their hair! I work fast and sufficient, that’s what people say about me. I don’t overbook and I get people in and out! And I’m pretty good too! :)
4. What am I most proud of and what are the main things I want potential clients/followers/fans to know about me?
I am proud about being the best stylist I can be. I’m proud that I have integrity and I care about people and not money! I work hard, I’ve invested so much money into myself and my business and I take my craft seriously!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn, is not taking advantage of my client’s time and money!
I used to be super late all the time. I didn’t care about peoples time. It showed a lack of care and responsibility. As a result I loss a major part of my clientele. I learned from my mistakes and now I’m early for work and people appreciate that.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot a few years ago as I was so stuck in my business and I wasn’t making any money. I had to relocate to a better environment, and change my mindset. I had a poverty mindset where I didn’t buy good products for my clients and I was just not motivated. I moved to a better location and I upgraded my products.
