We recently connected with Billie G and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Billie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I think my first time realizing I would risk it all for my music and to be an artist is when I had the opportunity to open up for Burna Boy 3 years ago. I was working at some apartments and I told my manager what I had going on and she said I had to make a decision lol. I was nervous, anxious, and so scared but I chose to quit and I never looked back. I didn’t know how I would pay my bills or where my next dollar would come from but I didn’t care all I wanted to do was perform and let people hear my music. I’ve been risking it ALL ever since. I don’t regret it at all.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been a creative. I’ve always kinda did my own thing and I’m just now learning to embrace that I’m different. I used to rap to my friends in school and tell them this is what I wanna do but I never really knew how to get into it or had the people around me that could help me do it. I just decided to start going to the studio, writing, and figuring it out on my own. I like to think I’m persistent over consistent because when I do I don’t and won’t miss. I make the music I wanna hear and it just so happens other people are catching on to it too. I’m fun, dark, cute, and unpredictable. I went to a performing arts school so I’m no stranger to being on stage or in the spotlight, when I want to be. I mostly want people to know that you can always keep going. I did it once AND IMA DO IT AGAIN 💕
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Man yes! People who don’t have a dream or aren’t chasing theirs will never understand why you do what you do. Before I make a decision I’m always like ok well how is that gone effect my music. Or will I still be able to do my music while I do this. Like nothing comes before it and I think when I choose to up and move or just make quick crazy decisions folks think im crazy and it’s like I’m just tryna do what I love.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What’s most rewarding for me is being able to do me. Having control over what people see is important for me. And when people like what I put out it’s like wooooow, yessss, thank you!! Really surreal to have people just love you and what you do.
