We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bill Breitenbach. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bill below.
Bill , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2022, I made the pivotal decision to join Oral Biolife as CEO, a biotechnology startup focused on developing innovative treatments for periodontal disease. This move marked a significant departure from my established career in large pharmaceutical companies, where I had over 25 years of experience leading product launches across various therapeutic areas. The allure of building a company from the ground up while pioneering a groundbreaking solution in dental care, specifically through the development of Ambrilux Dental Gel—a non-invasive medical device designed to regenerate bone tissue—was compelling. Embracing the inherent uncertainties of a startup environment, I leveraged my extensive industry experience to navigate challenges in product development and market entry and partnered closely with the Founder of the Company and built a strong team. Today, Oral Biolife is on the cusp of launching its first product in the companion animal market, with plans to accelerate commercialization for human applications, validating the calculated risk I took in steering this innovative venture.

Bill , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
With over 25 years in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, I have operated at the intersection of science, strategy, and commercialization, cultivating a reputation as a collaborative leader with strength in transforming innovation into market success. My career has encompassed significant roles in the commercialization of therapies across diverse therapeutic areas, including diabetes, pediatric cardiology, hemophilia, growth disorders, osteoporosis, allergy, and asthma. In 2022, I transitioned to Oral Biolife, drawn by the opportunity to address unmet needs in dental health through innovative solutions and my personal struggle with periodontal disease. Our flagship product, Ambrilux Dental Gel, exemplifies this commitment by offering a non-invasive approach to regenerating bone tissue lost to periodontal disease. What sets us apart is our utilization of piezoelectric materials to develop groundbreaking, first-to-market products that not only treat but aim to reverse the damage caused by dental diseases. I take immense pride in leading a team dedicated to advancing oral health and improving patient outcomes through science-driven innovation.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Beyond formal education and industry knowledge, adaptability and a collaborative mindset have been pivotal in my career success. The pharmaceutical and biotech landscapes are dynamic, requiring leaders to navigate regulatory changes, technological advancements, and evolving market demands. Embracing change and fostering strong partnerships have enabled me to drive successful product launches and steer organizations through complex challenges. Additionally, a genuine passion for improving patient outcomes serves as a constant motivator, guiding strategic decisions and inspiring my teams to excel.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Effective team management hinges on clear communication, empowerment, and recognition. By articulating a compelling vision and ensuring that each team member understands their goals and role they play in achieving it, leaders can foster a sense of purpose and alignment. Empowering individuals to take ownership of their work encourages innovation and personal growth. Regularly acknowledging and celebrating achievements, both big and small, reinforces a positive culture and motivates continued excellence. Creating an environment where open dialogue is encouraged and diverse perspectives are valued also contributes to high morale and collective success.
