Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bill Armstrong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Bill, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Commission to work in the Sistine Chapel
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist whose medium is photography. I have a unique process of appropriating images, painting and collaging them and the re-photographing them out of focus to create an ephemeral parallel world.
I was commissioned to work in the Sistine Chapel some years ago where I created a grid of images taken from Michelangelo that is now a permanent installation in the Vatican Museums hanging just to the right of the stairs to the Sistine Chapel. On June 23rd of this year I was invited to attend a celebration of the contemporary art collection in the Vatican where Pope Francis delivered a beautiful speech and then greeted all the attending artists personally. It was a thrilling moment to shake the Pope’s hand!
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFT’s are a very interesting new medium for art. I will be doing an NFT drop soon organized by the Assembly gallery in Houston, Texas.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I attended a portfolio review called FotoFest in Houston in 2000. before that I had no idea how to market my work or who to market it to. FotoFest changed my life and i recommend it or another portfolio review to any fine art photographer.
