We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bilan Liu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bilan below.
Alright, Bilan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the coolest trends I’m seeing in the design world right now is the rise of AI-generated content (AIGC) in visual design. AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E 2 are making it so much easier and faster to create stunning visuals. For instance, Adobe’s AI can now generate patterns and color palettes automatically, which is a huge time-saver. I’ve been impressed by AIGC artists like Refik Anadol, who uses AI to create mesmerizing data-driven art installations. His projects, like “Machine Hallucinations,” showcase how AI can transform vast datasets into visually stunning experiences. It’s amazing to see how AI can be used not just as a tool, but as a creative collaborator.
Another exciting trend that I noticed is the ease of use of AI in product design. Tools like Figma are incorporating AI features that boost the design development process. Canva’s AI, for example, can analyze your content and recommend layouts and fonts, making it easier for anyone to create professional designs.
These trends are opening up so many opportunities. AI is speeding up the design process, making high-quality design more accessible, and sparking new creative ideas. Overall, it’s an exciting time to be in design, and I’m really enjoying exploring these new tools and seeing how they can enhance my work.

Bilan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always had a deep passion for creativity and visual storytelling, which naturally led me to the field of design. As a child, I was constantly sketching and bringing my imaginative ideas to life in my sketchbooks. High school drawing classes opened my eyes to the potential of turning these creative inclinations into a career.
I chose to pursue design because I was drawn to the blend of aesthetics and functionality. Initially fascinated by industrial design, I explored various aspects during my undergraduate studies and discovered my true passion for visual communication. This realization was a turning point, showing me that design was about more than just creating visually appealing objects; it was about connecting with people and invoking emotions. Graphic design became my perfect medium for visual storytelling.
My journey into design has always been about creating work that makes a difference, improving user experiences, and promoting sustainability. This dedication drives me to take on new challenges and strive to make a positive impact through my work. I focus on integrating sustainability into my designs and telling visual stories that connect emotionally with users. I want potential clients to know that my work goes beyond aesthetics, aiming to create lasting, positive impacts.
One of my proudest achievements is the visual identity for BrightSideGoods. This project really captured my passion for sustainability and modern elegance, allowing me to create a cohesive brand identity from the ground up. BrightSideGoods wanted a visual identity that reflected their commitment to eco-friendly practices, and I aimed to make their brand both appealing and meaningful.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is deeply influenced by a simple yet profound question: how can I use design to make a positive impact on society? This question has guided me throughout my career, pushing me to explore the ways design can drive change and improve lives.
From a young age, I’ve been inspired by the works of designers like Dieter Rams, Kenya Hara, and Paula Scher. Their ability to communicate powerful messages and create meaningful change through design showed me the potential of this field. Their work made me realize that design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about connecting with people and influencing their perceptions and actions.
My passion for photography also plays a significant role in my design process. Photography allows me to capture the beauty and intricacies of everyday life. The principles I learn from photography—like composition, light, and texture—often find their way into my design projects, helping me create work that is not only visually compelling but also emotionally resonant.
Growing up in Chibi, China, and later studying and working in diverse environments, I developed a strong sense of cultural awareness. This background helps me create designs that are inclusive and resonate with a wide audience. Drawing inspiration from different cultural contexts enriches my work and allows me to tell more nuanced stories through design.
My background in industrial and interaction design has taught me to think critically and solve problems creatively. These skills are essential when navigating complex design challenges and finding innovative solutions that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Ultimately, my mission is to create designs that are not just beautiful but also meaningful and impactful. Whether it’s through improving user experiences, promoting sustainability, or telling compelling stories, I strive to use design as a force for good.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a designer is seeing my work come to life and being used and enjoyed by others. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about watching a design that started as a mere idea become a tangible reality. Knowing that my work will positively impact users and contribute to their experience is deeply satisfying.
The most thrilling moment is when the final product or project is completed. That sense of accomplishment and pride when you see your creation out in the world is unmatched. It’s what drives me to keep pushing the boundaries of my creativity and skills.
I especially enjoy working on projects that have a positive impact on individuals and society as a whole. Creating designs that improve daily life and contribute to people’s well-being is incredibly fulfilling for me. Projects closely related to our day-to-day lives, where I can design with the user in mind, are particularly rewarding. Understanding the needs, behaviors, and emotions of users allows me to create solutions that are not only functional but also meaningful and engaging.
My background in interaction design has greatly influenced my approach. I love working on projects that encourage interaction and engagement, whether through digital interfaces, physical products, or integrated systems. Designing interactive experiences that are intuitive, enjoyable, and impactful is something I find immensely rewarding.
