We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful BigFace Bennie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with BigFace below.
Alright, BigFace thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Around February of 2018, I purchased a home in Kissimmee Florida and quickly settled in. I then began to set up my recording studio equipment in the back end of my two car garage. A friend of mine who came for a visit saw what I was doing and made a proposition. He asked that he build me a full recording studio and in return I would allow his 15 year old son to record one song. I immediately thought it was a “no brainer” and we began the following weekend. It took two weeks to complete and after full set up and tests done, I invited his son to record. As I began to listen I was in shock and amazed. I thought to myself, “I cannot let this kid go”. I then researched how to create an LLC, Record label and a publishing company. That How BigFace Music World was created. Since then, I have signed his son, Yvng (pronounced as young) Viral, Cila LA Sicaria and myself as an artist.
BigFace, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a teenager in Brownville Brooklyn along with some friends, we were always creating music and dancing. At the age of 19 my son was born and my finances weren’t in order. Struggling and getting in trouble with the law and I wanted to do better for myself so that I could provide for my son. I then joined the army in 1999, and went overseas to Bagdad Iraq in 2004 – 2005. During that time, I was able to buy a laptop and downloaded a free producing software and in my spare time is when I began producing as well as continuing writing music. In 2008 – 2010, I went to Afghanistan and my brother bought me a camera to take with me. I was never a person who liked to to take photos but it quickly became a hobby. Then, I was asked to write a song about the team that was in while in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I did it and took it further and created a music video for it and that is how I began my ventures as a photographer, videographer and editor. To this day I do all this in BigFace Music World. You can imagine how scarce my time can be but the love for it drives me to always want to explore and create. I am most proud of doing this from scratch with the help from love ones and close friends. Not many people can say this do all this and I feel it puts me at an advantage. I can produce music and work with my artist and immediately have ideas of the visuals and began putting pieces of the puzzle together almost from the start. I asserted myself into learning all aspects of the business, the creation of music and turning it into visual creation that entertains the world. Having my hands in it all is a pleasure and such a rush for me. seeing the faces of people enjoying my art is the best feeling to have in the business.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During my tour in Iraq, I went through a time of feeling unaccomplished. I had no skill, no hobby, no education as I only received a G.E.D. during my last year of high school. So I kept thinking of what I would do when I returned home. I constantly came up blank. I was conducting missions everyday and was constantly being involved in some kind of explosion whether in a humvee or just walking to get chow. The funny thing is, the explosions can happened within two feet and I would always walk away without a scratch. I can’t say the same for the soldiers around me. It got to point where soldier didn’t want to be around me for fear that they would get hurt so I was alone a lot of the time. That’s when I purchased a laptop and occupied my time learning how to produce music. The bounce back for me is the depression of missing home and I felt like I brought home to me creating music.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You hear so many stories about how bad the music business is. I created so many ways to avoid those and thought I knew it all. I had to unlearn all of it and see how the good things were obtained. Doing that allowed me to see both sides and create my own lane in the music world. Understanding what contracts looked like and where artists were being cheated is what helped me create the form of morals, business acumen and relationships I have today.
