We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Big Texas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Big , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I got the idea to become a music artist from my journey with psychedelics at a young age. I’ve always enjoyed multiple genres of music and it’s always played a huge part in my life. But it wasn’t till I had an epiphany one day with a friend of mine (who’s a really talented singer & guitar player) while on psychedelics that made me actually pursue a musical career. At first I was a beat producer, then I would remix demo recordings of my friends music and make them sound better sonically or add hip-hop elements to it. Then throughout the years I slowly transitioned into writing lyrics, rapping, getting better at engineering, doing performances, and eventually opening up or touring for some of my favorite artist growing up. Which has now led to me curating and opening up for my own events that I do with my team called GOOD HERB RECORDS.
Big , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a rap artist, I go by BIG TEXAS.
I mainly perform and make what I like to call “punk rap.” Which is essentially me yelling on dark rap beats. It’s like a fusion of 2000’s crunk music, memphis phonk beats, and Texas lingo/influence.
I also do professional audio engineering as well, which is essentially taking raw vocal recordings and making them sound like the beautiful sonically sounding songs you hear on the radio.
Then lastly I do event curation. My team and I specialize in throwing rap/hip-hop shows. We essentially find a popular artist to book, find a venue, put the show together, and promote and spread the word. Get tickets sales, get artist who want to open up, and enjoy bringing legends to our city for fans to see. It also give me the opportunity to expose my music to new groups of people since I too also make music and can open up for the show.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You do not need to be famous to make money from music. I’ve learned that the music business is all about gaining real life fans and connecting with REAL people OUTSIDE. I’ve seen artists with hundreds of thousands of streams not able to sell 20 tickets. Yet, I’ve seen people with 100 monthly Spotify listeners sell 30+ tickets. Being a genuine human being, making genuine connections with people outside, and overall being a good person will make people want to support you and your music. Streams and online persona will only take you so far.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I curated my instagram to specifically show me only what’s going on in the music scene in Texas. I’ve since branched out to have my feed include other states that I’ve tapped into the communities of. But curating my feed to only shown me relevant info in the music world has helped establish and so many dope people who have the same goals and ambitions as I do. My feed does not have any memes, sh** posts, or mindless info. This has helped me build my audience and algorithm to be crafted specifically towards potential people I can either work with, or will enjoy my music.
