We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Big Sexy Berrywhite a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Big Sexy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started podcasting by accident. I had no idea how to do it. Luckily, my co-host had done a podcast prior to ours so I piggybacked his knowledge and figured it out. We have hosted on a few platforms until we landed on the best fit (so far) for our content. We learned thru trial and error and that was definitely… a way. Better would have been to research and inquire from fellow podcasters.

Big Sexy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I received my BA in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in acting from California State University, San Bernardino. In 2009, I relocated to Las Vegas and began making a name for myself in the entertainment industry.
I’ve been featured in a variety of shows, including The Lost Episodes, The Aussie Improv Comedy Explosion, Free Beer: An Improv Show, Twisted Cork, Evil Dead: The Musical, Alibi: The Show, and Hamiltunes: An American Sing-A-Long. I also hosted Karate Karaoke and continue to host it occasionally. Additionally, I have emceed several corporate and award events. I enjoy being a poet, playwright, parody songwriter, and performer.
In 2017, I joined the non-profit children’s theatre company Ants In The Pants Productions, where I taught creative writing to Las Vegas youth and performed their stories. I also ran an improv workshop for recovering addicts at Freedom Behavioral Health House.
Never one to slow down, I am constantly writing and exploring new avenues for creativity. I am currently penning my first full-length musical, Reservate This!: The Call Center Musical! and I’m in the process of getting my first book of poetry published. Recently, I started an entertainment company, Who Is Big Sexy Entertainment, which focuses on DJing, emceeing, officiating, and promotion.
I currently have 2 major passions. The first is my podcasting. In 2023, I began traveling the world as a digital nomad. I am co-hosting two podcasts. The first is about my adventures as a digital nomad, called Big Sexy Digital Nomad (bigsexynomad.com), showcasing my journey and the amazing people I’ve met along the way.
The second podcast I co-host with my wife, Nilla BerryWhite, is called Rainbow Dreamcatcher: The Love Podcast, which explores love, relationships, and human connection.
I serve as the talent, producer, engineer, editor, and publisher of both podcasts. It’s tough work, but if you want something done and can’t pay for someone else to do it yet (we are looking for sponsors), you have to do it yourself. I also teach improv, soul line dancing, and Chinese Mahjong whenever and wherever I can.
My second passion is becoming a professional cuddler. The pandemic created such a huge need for intimate, platonic connection and I have always been told my hugs are magical. I am currently setting up that business and looking to take clients soon. Big’s Hugs coming soon!
The top three qualities and skills that helped me get this far in life are, listening, empathy, and silliness.
As an active listener, I have been able to know the best way to entertain people, provide the humor, joy, and experience they are seeking, and make them feel special. With empathy, I can nurture and care about the people I meet throughout my journey, and, in turn, they open up to me, trust me, and are willing to share their stories with me. Silliness provided me the ability to be free from the weight of other people’s judgment of my choices and decisions and without worrying about those, I have had the power to chase my dreams and find success in the things I have chosen to do in my life.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I developed my confidence and self-esteem at a young age. I entered the theater in high school and that was very instrumental in that development. I went to Eisenhower High School in Rialto, CA. It was a 3-year high school where the students entered as sophomores. I wasn’t the greatest student then and my grades reflected that. I was then shipped off to live with my dad and had to attend our rival school Fontana High. I tried to join the marching band since that was my passion and the band teacher was a jerk. I walked out of the music wing and directly into the theater wing and have never looked back. I learned that in theater, tough skin and resilience are required. The ups and downs of auditioning, casting, rehearsals, and performances are not for the weak-willed. You need tough skin to keep going after countless rejections both known and assumed.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Funding and support for creatives so that they don’t have to get regular jobs to live would be incredible. With requirements of production of their craft on a regular basis and ended once they reached a certain income bracket.
Society can also support creatives by showing up to their shows, exhibitions, gigs, etc.
