We recently connected with Bianca Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Bianca, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
I think the biggest trend is a shift of mindset in the hairstylist community. Valuing your free time, charging your worth, taking the time off with out feeling guilt, and most of all taking the clients YOU want. I love what I do so much that it’s so easy to say yes to everyone. It’s refreshing to see stylists setting boundaries in the industry. Another trend I’m seeing a lot of (and something I’m also trying to be more active in). is being more conscious of products and waste. After using the same brand for years, it’s daunting to do all the research myself to be a conscious consumer that also wants to deliver the same results (or better) that my clients are used to. Without a doubt, I plan on riding the wave of education, and doing better in every way I can!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The funny thing about how this crazy journey started was all because of my dad. I had been out of school, my partner and I had just separated, it was just my daughter and I with no plan on how I was going to support us. I loved having fun hair and after several at home bad dye jobs, my dad suggested I go learn how to do it the right way. The rest just fell into place! I’ve been in the industry for over a decade now and spent the majority of it at one salon. I climbed the ranks and eventually began to educate within the salon and training stylists I hired myself to work under me. I was incredibly successful but I knew I didn’t want to work for someone else for the foreseeable future. I went on the most terrifying ventures of my career this year and opened my very own space, “The Wild Hare Salon.” I’ve always believed that the industry is beautifully diverse as should the education one receives and the products one uses. My mission is to provide a calm space where my clients can lower their guard and unwind. All while receiving top notch services using the best products, and techniques. I pride myself in branching out and trying new things so my clients can always look forward to me having an answer to anything they’re curious about in terms of their hair.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2010 I moved to Denton, and started working at a chain salon. While I was there, I made the choice to go to school because it just felt like I wasn’t sure if hair was going to be lucrative for me, and I needed a back up plan. In the midst of all that I applied to a local salon and ended up working there for a decade! During my time there I began to realize what I wanted out of my career and decided in the last few years I needed to leave in order to feel fulfilled. I wanted to work in a space that was calm, relaxing, giving my clients a safe space to be themselves wholeheartedly, allowing me to work at my own pace and really create without feeling rushed. Opening my own salon was the next step in my career to give myself everything I needed from my work and wanted for my clients! Since opening I’ve learned so much about myself and how I wish to project my business in this competitive industry. I’m always looking at how things can be improved. Currently, I’m working on introducing my clients to more sustainable haircare, as well as a hair appointment that speaks true to the new atmosphere being cultivated at The Wild Hare Salon.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
Before The Wild Hare Salon was named as such, my space was just a blank room. Also blank was my marketing strategy, branding and so much more. The sticker shock of building all of this up was certainly daunting but what I’ve since reinforced for myself is two things: First, never be afraid to invest in yourself. Secondly, nobody ever gets any where on their own! The entire launch of my salon was a success because of the connections I had made with my career. I hired Illuminare Designs to create an ambiance unique to my space, Jennifer Meza Photography for my branding shoot which is used for content on my website and social media pages! And of course The Wild Hare wouldn’t have the online presence it has with out the help of my media manager, Belle Ame Agency. Due to my taking the risk not only for myself but allowing myself to bring others in, my books are always busy with the most wonderful clients a stylist could ever wish for!
