We were lucky to catch up with Bharti Trivedi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bharti, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Art found me before I realized I was looking for it. My journey into fiber art wasn’t a planned pursuit—it was born out of a moment of stillness during motherhood. While on bed rest, I had to slow down, something I wasn’t accustomed to. Creativity became my refuge, my way of feeling productive and connected to myself. I explored different art mediums like painting, pottery, —but macrame had a language of its own, one that spoke to me deeply. The tactile nature of fibers, their rawness, their ability to be molded into shapes that could tell a story—it was mesmerizing.
The transition from passion to profession was organic. What started as a personal exploration soon turned into a calling. When I shared my work, people resonated with it. They saw in my pieces a reflection of nature, emotion, and human connection. That’s when I knew—this wasn’t just something I loved doing; this was something I needed to share with the world.
Bharti, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Bharti, the artist behind Yashi Designs, where I create fiber-based sculptures and wall hangings that bridge art, nature, and emotion. My work is deeply personal, reflecting my experiences, the people I connect with, and my ever-growing relationship with nature. I work primarily with natural materials like cotton, jute, and wood—each piece carrying the essence of organic textures and earthy tones.
My journey into fiber art started out of necessity. During motherhood, I became more conscious of the materials I surrounded myself with, seeking sustainable and eco-friendly mediums. I found comfort in working with fibers, knotting and weaving my emotions into them. Over time, I taught myself various traditional textile techniques and began experimenting with ways to modernize them. What sets my work apart is the deep emotional connection behind every piece I create. My art is not just about aesthetics—it tells a story of personal journey, nature-inspired reflection, and the quiet strength of handmade craft. I work with natural fibers like jute and cotton, shaping them through time-intensive techniques into sculptural forms that feel both grounding and poetic.
Each piece holds emotion, memory, and a sense of place. It’s a blend of traditional techniques with a modern touch, often shaped by my experiences as a mother, a woman, and someone who finds healing and inspiration in the simplicity of nature. I think that authenticity—of staying close to who I am, working with my hands, and letting my pieces speak quietly yet powerfully—is what makes my work truly unique.
I create sculptural wall pieces that bring warmth, depth, and an organic element into spaces. My pieces are sought after by home owners, interior designers, art collectors, and those looking to add a unique, meaningful touch to their homes. What I’m most proud of is the ability of my art to resonate with people on an emotional level. I often hear from collectors who say my work brings them a sense of peace, nostalgia, or grounding. That, to me, is the highest honor—to create something that evokes feeling and creates presence in a space.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience is woven into every knot of my work. One of the biggest challenges I faced was transitioning from creating as a personal escape to establishing myself as a professional artist. As a self-taught fiber artist, I had no formal background in the arts, no roadmap to follow, no guidance on sourcing materials, no knowledge of techniques, no idea where to sell, and no connections to art galleries or marketplaces. It was an uncharted path, and every step felt like walking into the unknown. But I kept moving forward, by focusing on my love for creating rather than the uncertainties. Slowly, doors began to open. My persistence led to collaborations with art consultants and online galleries, which became a breakthrough in my journey.
Social media played a significant role, but it didn’t come easy. Before 2019, I had no online presence, and as an introvert, I struggled with what to say in captions or how to engage with an audience. Posting on Instagram felt overwhelming. But then, reels were introduced, and I found a way to showcase my process through videos. These short clips gave my work more exposure than static posts ever did. My engineering background unexpectedly turned into an asset—I understood algorithms, SEO, and video editing, which became silent forces behind my Instagram growth and website success.
My husband and I built my website from scratch, learning every necessary skill along the way. Whenever a challenge arose, we tackled it head-on, learning, adapting, and finding solutions. From rendering my artwork digitally to curating visuals for better presentation, every struggle became an opportunity to grow. Small business owners face countless battles, and I’ve fought mine with determination, a willingness to learn, and an unshakable belief that I was meant to do this.
Resilience, for me, has been about trusting the process, embracing the struggles, and knowing that each step forward—no matter how uncertain—was shaping the journey I was meant to walk.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is witnessing how my work becomes part of someone’s life. When a piece leaves my studio and enters a home, a hotel, or a gallery, it takes on a new story, a new meaning. I love knowing that my art brings warmth, texture, and emotion into spaces where people create memories.
Another deeply fulfilling aspect is the act of creating itself. There’s something almost meditative about working with fibers—repeating patterns, feeling the materials in my hands, seeing a vision slowly come to life. It’s a process that keeps me grounded and allows me to express what words sometimes cannot.
But above all, it’s about the connections—connecting with people, with nature, and with the ever-evolving story that unfolds through each piece I create.
