Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beya Hernandez Lusk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Beya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
In the art world, 99.9% of the people who make art will never really find a pretty penny coming out of it, and that you have to know the galleries and the curators and the creative directors to be able to have a shot of knowing the people who would be willing to be an audience for your craft. It’s a lot of work and effort And most people who make money are just very lucky because they were at the right place at the right time. But when you are an artist in an artistic community you find that the least valuable thing is money. And that the most valuable thing are the companions that you meet and all the weirdos that you bump into every once in a while.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started doing visual art professionally in 2022, but I’ve been wanting to have a professional craft for a while. And the pandemic very much influenced when I was going to start showing my art. I sell ceramics in paintings, As well as soft sculpture. The most thing I’m proud of is being able to find myself in an art community that excepts me and wants to see my work. The best people for me to be around or people who can appreciate art, and know artists better than I. I tend to think of myself as an abstract artist that likes to be pronounced in the black identity. I find myself enthralled in art history in the more that I dig in the more that I find myself in so much common with people who are generations before me. For being still in high school, I have every intention of building my brand from visual arts to FASHION and hopefully become a creative designer for a company and do that till I turn gray. I tend to love the more vintage, classic ideas of design. But still incorporate a more fluid modernism with art deco. As in my career right now, I have every intention to start showing my work around the United States in soon in a few years time show my work internationally.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Off the bat networking is one of the best skills anyone can have if they want to make it an any industry. To be yourself is to be different to be honest is to be charismatic, and to be compassionate is to be noticeable. I find because of my age I am able to see him a little bit more impressive, but I do have my times where I can’t help but to be quiet and shy and many people revert to that as a safety thing, but trust me, your biggest downfall is not feeding yourself the information that you deserve.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
That things will never come to you ever, I found this to only be the case when I realized that my frustration was coming from a sense of defeat, because I assumed that if I showed enough people my work that they would allow me to be part of their shows, as almost as if it was a movie. I was quickly disillusioned when I found that the only way people would take me seriously is if I took the reigns myself.
