We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bexter Richardson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bexter below.
Bexter, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am happier as an artist and creative. There’s nothing compared to the freedom of expression we illustrate in our work. The ability and opportunity to create something from a mere idea or inspiration into a published musical product always brings a sense of satisfaction that goes way beyond the “9 to 5”. This whole creation process is so personal and fulfilling that it becomes, MY work, MY job, MY world, MY environment and MY liberty and safe space to be and feel as entitled. We cannot take such attitude to a regular job.
See, I also work a regular job so this comparison goes on Monday to Friday for me. However, we need one job to pay for the other until the other is no longer necessary. In today’s economy, it’s very difficult for an independent artist to ONLY live off the music so we are almost forced to also get a regular job as creatives. Would I trade my soul food for a pay check? No, but the paycheck makes room to feed the soul. The conclusion of the matter is independent artists like myself today must balance the demands with keeping up with their crafts while also providing their daily bread.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Bexter Richardson, “Bex” for short, is a Liberian-American singer, songwriter, audio engineer, and entrepreneur
based in Maryland or the DMV area. The multi-cultural
experience from his background has created and
contextualized his interests in international music,
specifically music from the Afrobeats, Hip Hop and R&B
genres. Bex is the founder of Fourscore Technologies, an
IT startup that focuses on cybersecurity, cloud and
network engineering. He is also founder and CEO of LiBx Records
International, a small indie label with a big vision
focusing on the fusion of Afrobeats with other international
genres with the objectives of changing lives through music. As an indie
artist himself, Bex is dedicated to the growth and success
of the indie community.
In 2020, Bex played an instrumental role in the founding
of LiBx Records Foundation, a non-profit that seeks out
talented youths living in the streets and ghettos of
Liberia, helping them transition to better living conditions
through rehabilitation, education and mentorship and
career development. Bex currently resides in Maryland,
his home-state, where he continues to run various
projects ranging from music, IT, and other non-profit
programs.
Bex and the team has successfully completed three new projects banging the airwaves: Poom Poom, Happy Birthday, and Liberian Girl. Each of these projects tell a unique story and you can learn more about them below: https://linktr.ee/libxrecords
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
NFTs are the future as everything (even for creative) continues to go digital. First, we had the move “online” or the internet revolution where every business are almost expected to have a website to share in this cyberspace. The digital currencies and virtual reality is no different. Our LiBx Records brank also created it’s first NFT through Open Sea.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would answer this question by saying (not necessarily resource but) knowledge. It lies on this simple fact: there’s a difference between the music and the music business. I wish I understood the importance of PRs, promotions, marketing, branding, affiliating, publishing, and copyrighting earlier on in my career. All these things are so different from a studio session or a freestyle in the booth that they almost sound so foreign to the creative but yet very necessary for success today
