We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bex Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bex below.
Hi Bex, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I got into boudoir because I’m am wildly passionate about helping women claim their power. Boudoir is about empowerment. I am here to show women that they are beautiful, sexy, and powerful exactly as they are. I focus on flattering posing and not body modification in post-production. I am not a digital plastic surgeon. I firmly believe that photoshopping in boudoir is not at all empowering, rather, it perpetuates body shame. I’m here to teach ladies to embrace their bodies and the evolutions we go through as women. My Facebook group Badass Boudoir by Bex Williams focuses on empowering women and teaching them to release the need to hold ourselves to society’s unrealistic expectations for our appearances. As I always say, sexy isn’t a size, it’s a mindset. I strive to show my clients that I don’t have to change you in order to make you beautiful. You are worthy and perfect exactly as you are. We are humans. We are meant to grow and stretch and wrinkle and fold and every single season of your body is beautiful. Body acceptance and self-love are a journey. We all have good days and bad days, but you are worthy on every single one of them.
Bex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After my first son, I struggled to return to my 9-5. I would have to wake up at 4:00 in the morning to pump, commute to Denver, work a ten-hour day, drive home in rush hour, and then spend 1-2 hours with my baby before putting him down for the night. I cried on my way to the office every single day. I read David Goggins’s “Can’t Hurt Me,” and I realized I had two choices: get over it or do something about it. I dove head first into photography. I started off self-taught and devoured YouTube tutorials, but I found the market incredibly competitive. At the end of my first year, I had barely turned a profit. I had to take a huge risk and really invest in education. Once I found my mentors, I learned how to run a business. I learned about taxes, liability insurance, registering with the state, profit margins, investing, determining my cost of doing business, etc. I knew that I had to commit entirely if I wanted to turn this into a real business that could replace my income and support my family and not just a side hustle. I couldn’t be half in (accepting any job that came my way and working under the table). I had to give one hundred percent and risk failure. If there’s one thing I will always bet on, it’s myself. After two years in business, I discovered boudoir photography. I finally found a form of photography that I know I was meant to do. I love empowering women. I love helping women build their confidence and self-love. I focused all of my mentoring, photography education, and time on boudoir. I’m obsessed, but in a good way. The problem most of my potential clients have is that they don’t feel sexy. They don’t believe they can be sexy in lingerie in front of a camera. That’s where I come in. I pose them from start to finish from their facial expressions to their toes. I crawl into each and every pose first, then my clients copy me. I have an incredibly inclusive client closet that ranges from XS-5X. I provide all the lingerie and any outfit that my client wears, she gets to keep! My sessions include professional hair and makeup and gorgeous props like my deluxe six foot long angel wings. Boudoir is about more than beautiful, high quality images. It’s about being treated like a goddess for a day. It’s a luxurious experience that leaves you feeling like a badass.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I connect with most of my clients on Facebook! It’s crazy to think four years ago I didn’t even have a Facebook and now I have a private boudoir client group of nearly 2,000 women. We are women only (yes, I go through every single profile who joins to make sure its not secretly a guy who created the profile last week) and we talk about body positivity, motherhood, dating, relationships, and of course boudoir. We joke around, share a meme or two, and seek advice from one another. It’s really a community for women who don’t believe that sexy is a size and that women deserve to feel worthy in the skin their in. I also offer exclusive sales, modeling opportunities, and last minute scheduling availability. Join us!! Badass Boudoir by Bex Williams in the groups section on Facebook.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my job is when my client sees their images. I can’t tell you how many women have some to their sessions with their hands shaking and pure fear in their eyes. I love breaking down their walls, helping them relax, and getting them to have fun! This is my strength. I very often get told “you are the best hype woman ever.” That’s my favorite compliment. I love taking a client who walked in the door with tears in her eyes and making her laugh and smile and feel like a badass by the time she leaves my studio. I have tips, tricks, techniques, and yes a little champagne goes a long way (wink wink.) At the end of the day, we have fun. I make these sessions fun. My favorite part is when a client who told me during our phone consult that she hasn’t felt good about herself since long before she had children sees her photos and says “Omg that’s me?!” Yes, girl. That’s all you. I don’t do heavy retouching. That’s all you. And you are beautiful and strong and authentic exactly as you are. I didn’t change you, I just helped you see that.
