We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bex Schulman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bex, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When my cousin was planning her wedding and searching for a meaningful way to ask witnesses to sign her ketubah, a Jewish marriage contract, there wasn’t much on the market. I saw an opportunity to create something contemporary and on-trend special for Jewish couples and people who resonate with Jewish culture.
From there, the Nice Jewish Girl (NJG) Doodles brand was born, beginning with the signature “Will You Sign Our Ketubah” card pack. NJG Doodles also offers bespoke greeting cards for life’s milestones, traditions, and everyday moments. There is also a “Stuff To Schlep Home” notepad, all featuring my original illustrations.
With technology and how people live so chronically online, I think there’s a real desire for that human-to-human connection that people constantly crave. Getting a card in the mail or receiving a handwritten note to celebrate a milestone goes a long way. To think I can help people hold onto memories and create keepsakes means a lot to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, I’m Bex!
You can think of me, and Nice Jewish Girl (NJG) Doodles, as your Jewish older sister – here for you throughout your celebrations, milestones, challenges, transitions, and everyday simchas (Yiddish word for happiness) in between.
My mission with NJG Doodles is to bridge people to Jewish culture and community with a modern twist and a whole lot of chutzpah (the Yiddish word for gall).
I create contemporary stationery and gifts that celebrate Jewish culture. I also work with individuals, organizations, and other businesses to create custom art.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth is powerful! Everyone is an influencer, and the best way to build a community is by leveraging your existing one. People who are enthusiastic about my brand, mission, and work are invaluable because they naturally spread the word to others in their own authentic way.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started sharing about my business months before the official launch, which helped grow my community and build authentic trust with followers. By using engagement tactics and strategies before the site was live, I generated excitement about my products and brand. Seeking direct feedback from my followers became a key part of my approach, helping to refine my offerings and build trust. This early engagement primed my community to continue providing valuable feedback, making it a staple of our ongoing strategy.
