We recently connected with Bex and have shared our conversation below.
Bex, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
This is every creative person’s dream. To be able to do what you love and have it be your job. The truth however is: it’s hard. Really hard. Some people are lucky and get signed or get a gig that pays really well right away. I’m not one of them. Most people are not one of them. I had to and still have to, to a certain degree, take every little job that comes along. Even if the opportunity wasn’t exactly what I wanted or felt like it would get me where I wanted to go. Being self employed is difficult. I’ve had months where I made a lot of money and months where I made almost nothing. There’s no regular income and therefor you never know what your next month really looks like. Sometimes it looks great and suddenly all the opportunities fall through. Sometimes it’s the other way around. I prefer the latter ;)
After 4 years of trying to make a living, I’m able to live from what I make. But it’s still not easy. I find it quite stressful during the months that are not great. However I’m very grateful that I can do what I love every day. And I’m hopeful that one day it will become a little easier and more stable.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a female bipoc music producer, songwriter and singer, but I mostly focus on music production. I’m originally from Switzerland. Since I’ve been a little girl I’ve dreamed of making music in the US. In 2015 I got the opportunity to study Songwriting and Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music. After graduating in both majors I moved to LA to do music full time. In recent years I had the opportunity to co-write and co-produce the music for the show The Mayans M.C season 2 as well as place songs I produced and co-wrote in shows like Riverdale and Help I’m In A Secret Relationship. I had the opportunity to work with artists like Vo Williams, Jarina DeMarco, Gizzle, Rayelle, and TIMMS.
I really enjoy to make pop, hiphop, and EDM and I like when I can add a little edge to it. In any production I believe the vocals are the center and focus and therefor really enjoy vocal production as well. My goal as a producer is to bring the artist’s vision alive as well as make space for their voice to shine through.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
This might sound a bit cheesy but I think it’s as simple as: passion. I can’t turn it off. If I stop making music it feels like I’m abandoning the very core of who I am. I would live a half life. Sounds like Harry Potter, but it’s true. Of course success and money is amazing and I hope one day I will reach that, but it’s not the driving force behind it. It’s that fire in my heart that won’t stop burning. Also there is a point where you can’t really go back cause you invested so much you better see it through hahaha
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When I’m able to touch someone with my music. Helping someone out of a tough spot with it or even if someone just really enjoys it. It makes me feel like I’ve done something right and it was worth the effort.
