We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Beverly Obasiolu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Beverly, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
How I came up with the ideas for Faschic Magazine was not an overnight process. I had to work on it. But initially, I came up with the idea after realizing that while modeling, there weren’t any recognition of our talents here in my hometown. I had to do something to showcase not only myself, but local people who share the same talents as I do. I used to model and participate in fashion shows with few people in my city and one girl in particular had so much potential to be an amazing model but she didn’t have the means to travel or do any shows. She really inspired me to create this fashion magazine and that’s what made me think about the south as a whole. The southern region has so many talented people but hardly any recognition. With my magazine, I wanted to reach as many people in the southern region as I could to be apart of something so great that it was going to be a force to reckon with. This was back in 2016 and this purpose still stands today. You can also say, it’s the mission.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Beverly Obasiolu CEO and Editor-In-Chief of my own fashion magazine. I started in 2016 as an online magazine. At the time, print or digital copies weren’t an option but I evolved. After revamping, in 2018, I began with print magazines and later down the line included digital copies. I got into this business by learning the basics of how to uphold a magazine company but more-so by modeling in the fashion industry. I knew so many important people and traveled to work with few. With the magazine you learn self-discipline, timing and professionalism. The types of services I do offer with my company are the following: Advertising, Media/Press Event Coverage, Article and Interviews. I think what sets me apart from others is that I really give the creative process to the models, photographers, and others. They get to express themselves the way they want to see themselves in a magazine. Sure you can always go onset to get your photos taken with a major publication but they dress you up and tell you what to do. With my magazine, you can submit to us what you consider fashion. I’m most proud of the moments where I wanted to throw the towel in but I didn’t. I believed in myself enough to know that what I’m doing is a positive thing and I’m inspiring so many people. I really want people in general to know that my brand speaks for itself and it literally represents diversity.

We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I have a business partner, Rasheedah Williams. She helps me with so much! My first encounter with her was in 2018 when I decided to go print. I didn’t realize that I was buzzing a little bit at the time because she’s located in Virginia and I’m in Louisiana. She saw the work that I was doing and my purpose and reached out to me. She told me how she knew so many models with potential and that weren’t getting recognized in her hometown either. That broke my ignorance because I didn’t know that it was hard for models to be seen on the East Coast. They have access to more than we do. But luckily, she told me everything and it was really the plus model community she was referring to. I understood the issue and decided to work with her because she didn’t just talk about it, she showed me how much she really wanted to work with me. Ever since that phone call in 2018 she hasn’t stopped for a day. I had to draw up the right paperwork and contract for her to continue to work with me because honestly without Rasheedah, I wouldn’t have reached so many people in the DMV area that quickly. I appreciate her relentlessly!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe what helped me build my reputation within my market of fashion are three things: Professionalism, Communication and Gratitude. My professionalism has gotten my far in this industry because people realize how serious I am about my brand and they respect it. Communication is huge because without people knowing what you want and how you want things to be done, my business would have shut down by now. It’s highly imperative that I communicate with my team, my prospects and other clientele I plan to do business with. My gratitude goes a long way. When people do things for you it’s always good to say thank you but even greater to show them how much you appreciate them. Even in the smallest way, you can continue to work with them and include them in your future endeavors.
