We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beverly Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beverly below.
Alright, Beverly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I have served my community my entire adult life. Whether donating school supplies for a grade level every year to feeding the hungry or providing Christmas gifts to underprivileged children. In 2021, I just decided to “officially” serve. Meaning, obtaining our 501(c)(3) and credentials from the Secretary of State. Also, in 2021, I was blessed with 4 great nieces and 2 great nephews. That’s when I realized how expensive baby necessities are. Thankfully, my nieces were gainfully employed but I knew that was not true for a number or mothers. This prompted me to step into my purpose, the purpose that I had asked God to reveal to me, Thus, Jinnscrib was birthed. Jinn’s is the first initial of my children’s first name.
Beverly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For years I prayed to God to reveal my true purpose. Something I was really passionate about and something that would keep me up at night anticipating how I could serve others. The answer was in front of me all along, I love shopping, especially for children. So, I shopped, usually twice a month for baby clothing, diapers, furnishings etc. In about 6 months I started going to teen clinics, shelters and schools to see where Jinn’s could help. We really don’t have a budget We have gotten support from a few retail stores and individuals who believe in what we are doing. My children are the Board of Directors. They pay monthly dues as well as my husband. We are trying to build a bank account to secure a location. Right now we are providing a mobile service, we deliver. So, for now our main concern is getting support. In-kind gifts as well as monetary donations.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Initially I thought that if I was doing something good, something to help others, something God given, the journey would be easy. I was told that businesses readily donates buildings, property to non profits. Grants were out there waiting for you to get them, just ask. That has not been my testimony. My vision is so much bigger than just giving. I want to help the women I serve in every aspect of their lives such as employment, childcare, parenting so that they can thrive and their babies can thrive. With a vision such as that, I know that it may take a little longer for my dreams to be fulfilled but I continue to work and serve as I wait.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As previously stated, with my business I realized that even though you’re working to better the community, helping others, providing service, people are not always willing to help. And also that some people will try to exploit or take advantage. Even those who are providing the same type service are reluctant to provide advise, resources or recommendations. I basically had to develop our own grassroots efforts as a means for financing. We are slowly but surely getting our name out, servicing more people and enjoying the fruits of our labor.
