We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beverly Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beverly below.
Beverly, appreciate you joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My first job in the health and wellness world was as a Zumba Fitness instructor at a gym around the corner from me. A friend of mine knew the owner was looking for an instructor. The owner was willing to take a chance on a newbie.
I remember walking into the classroom and experiencing a mixture of excitement and fear. There were three ladies waiting on me and we all exchanged pleasantries. The A/C wasn’t working and fans were placed around the room to create a breeze.
I walked over to the sound system and began to take my place in the front of the room. I remember thinking, “Just don’t fall! Smile! Do your best!” Forty-five minutes later, the class was over. The students seemed pleased and I could finally exhale.
Looking back, my initial plan was not to start an official business. It was probably around year 3 that I developed a deeper interest to become a personal trainer and coach. Had I not faced my fears and jumped into this arena, Genesys Fitness wouldn’t be here. Sometimes, you need to jump and go for it!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Genesys Fitness (also called GenFit) was created in April 2015. By this point, I’d been teaching dance fitness for about three years. Many of my students began asking me questions about health and wanted me to become their trainer. They trusted my insight. Many of my students were looking for someone who provided sound information. They also saw my commitment to my own well-being and knew that I “walked the walk”.
At its core, GenFit provides practical, sustainable solutions for its clients. After a consultation, a strategic plan is developed and customized to each person. Part of my success is that I take the time to listen to and understand each of my clients. As we age, our fitness needs change and we all need a coach who will challenge us but also recognize our limitations.
GenFit is a community of women who recognize the need to reclaim their lives and are emotionally ready to do the work. Through coaching, the foundation and a roadmap is created to reclaim your identity through customized coaching, fitness training, and strategies to build sustainable changes.
What makes me proud? Watching my clients unleash their “inner diva”! When my clients celebrate their victories. I love receiving pictures of my clients celebrating a new dress size. I’m incredibly humbled to be a part of their success.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being in the health and wellness industry for over a decade, I’ve learned that the old adage is true- ” people don’t care about how much you know until they know that you care.”
I believe that much of my success has been because I take the time to get to know and understand my clients. As a coach, my clients often share their most vulnerable and difficult moments. They share because they trust me and know that my sessions are a safe space.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back to my undergraduate days, I would have stuck with computer science as a minor. Computer science sparked my interest and I loved the challenge of solving the problems. However, there’s one particular class that I struggled with. Rather than pushing deeper, I dropped the class and moved on.
The lesson behind it was this- there will always be a difficult season in our journey. Instead of giving up, have the determination to work through it.
