We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Beverly Brooks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Beverly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
Entrepreneurship came to me at a very young age when I began writing the ‘family newspaper’. I don’t recall the ‘riveting topics’, but I’m sure it involved hiking or a weekend adventure with my family! Of course, every good newspaper needs beautiful imagery, so before long I began documenting everything.
I’ve always been compelled to tell the ‘untold stories’ of adventures, triumphs and tragedies and had a penchant for helping others. Not surprisingly, this was the beginning of a long and exciting journalism career in television news where I worked as a news anchor, reporter and manager.
I eventually took a break from the corporate world and launched a small public relations business where I coached executives for news interviews, and helped them leverage social media platforms to increase their revenue.
In retrospect, I didn’t invest enough financially in my own business when it first got off the ground. I literally worked off a laptop and two cell phones! I believe entrepreneurs should go full throttle, for the best outcome.
Beverly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My brand is Amplified Business Solutions, a full service integrated marketing and communications agency. I help businesses with branding, publicity, social media and sales funnels. I work with creatives including influencers to collaborate and host events to raise awareness. It’s so fun showcasing the lighter side of our clients, and watching their businesses grow.
I’m constantly seeking ways to help businesses improve their workflow and quality. Perhaps customer service is lacking, or the restaurant’s food is no longer tasty, I find ways to help them overcome obstacles. Their success is my success.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients, has been networking. When I’m not networking, the leads and connections literally stop.
I often keep up with former colleagues on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. Alignable has also proven to be an interesting resource for client prospecting.
While clients are selective with their marketing agency, I’m equally as selective when it comes to the businesses I represent.
A good foundation is built on trust, where everyone is supported.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My resiliency is constantly being tested. While I absolutely loved my exhilarating television news career, it eventually took a toll on my personal life and I struggled to strike a balance. The transition from television news to public relations wasn’t easy, but persistence and hard work eventually paid off. I’m never resistant to change and always open to learning new skills.
Pro tip: Being a business owner not only helps you control your destiny, it can also keep you out of a cubicle!
