Today we’d like to introduce you to Bev Standing.
Hi Bev, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Sixteen years ago, I found myself in a stage of life I wasn’t expecting so soon. In order to keep busy and keep my mind off what was going on, I took a weekend course. The only course I found was a voiceover workshop. So I simply said YUP and signed up. I found it really took my mind off of the sadness I was going through, and while I was behind the mic, I was able to give my heart time to heal. So I continued. Once a week I took Improv at Second City, then some acting classes, and then more voiceover acting classes.
Several years later I found myself giving up my day job and becoming a full time voice actor.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have been very lucky to have met some of the kindest and most talented people in the industry. Also, in a time when home studios were just becoming a thing, I was learning at the same time as everyone else. I didn’t believe in fate until getting into the voiceover industry. When I went to buy my first mic, a gentleman helped me in the store, listening to why I wanted to buy what I needed, and helped me every step of the way. When I went to pay, he told me he didn’t work there, he was a sound engineer. We ended up discovering we lived close so he offered to help me with recording software and started me on my way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bev Standing Inc.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a one person team. I provide voiceover services, as well as coaching. I’m half of the Canadian Team for Gravy for the Brain (GFTB), the largest online voiceover learning platform, and a member of the Board of Directors for CAVA (Canadian association of Voice Actors). I have a US Work Visa to enable me to travel and work too.
For the most part, I work globally, from my professionally built home studio. My favourite commercial that I did was for Kraft. My Dad was an advertising executive (many years ago) and he had the Kraft account, so that holds a special place in my heart.
My vocal range is vast, from very young to very old, I speak with a neutral North Americal accent, Canadian accent, and a light RP British accent – just like my Mom. I record alone, or have you connect remotely for directed sessions. Whatever works best for my client.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Working makes me happy. Sounds strange but I really truly love what I do. I get to be creative. Every job is different, every audition is different. I have connected with people from all around the work, some just starting in this industry and some very famous people. The great thing is, they are all lovely, helpful and kind. It’s the best industry I’ve every been part of.
Most importantly I made a New Years Resolution in 2022 and reinforce it every year. I now have “LIFE-WORK BALANCE”, not work-life balance. If my life is in order, the work flows better and I’m happier.
