We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Betty Encinales a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
BETTY, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Moving to different countries for work has been a bold risk—stepping into the unknown without a network to lean on. But my adaptability and curiosity have been my greatest allies, helping me build connections and thrive wherever I land. It’s the price—and the reward—of having a global mindset and a passion for exploring the world!”
BETTY, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ive spent over a decade in recruitment and headhunting, spanning industries from Financial Services to Media. Currently, I recruit for Newsweek, a renowned US global publication. My journey into talent acquisition began by accident, inspired by my own struggles finding the right support in my job search. Determined to make a difference, I immersed myself in learning the craft—running my own agency and working in-house. It’s been a challenging but deeply rewarding journey, watching candidates thrive in their careers and companies succeed with the teams I’ve helped build.”
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
“Recruitment requires a naturally resilient mindset. While working with people can be incredibly inspiring, it also comes with its challenges. There are moments when you pour your energy into a hiring process, only for a candidate to pull out at the final stage—forcing you to start from scratch. It can be frustrating, but the key is understanding it’s never personal; it’s just part of the job. The sooner you embrace moving forward quickly and staying focused, the stronger you become in this profession.”
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
In a world full of professionals doing the same job, building a strong reputation requires more than just showing up—it demands discipline, trustworthiness, and expertise. Discipline means showing up every day, even when it’s tough. Trustworthiness is about doing what you say you will, following through every time. Experience gives you the depth to navigate tools and systems effectively, and a commitment to continuous learning ensures you can provide the best advice to clients and candidates alike. These are the pillars that set you apart in any industry.
