Betty , appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I actually was not the “artist” in the family when I first started painting. I have always been creative. I began painting about 15 years ago. I was with someone who could do your portrait with in minutes… to perfection. I had been painting for a few months, so I had a handful of paintings. I set up a little art table in front of my partners work place which happen to be a tattoo shop. When their boss came out to see my little set up, He said “oh, I see who the artist in the family really is”. I was confused & said what do you mean. He said, “your the real artist, artist create, they produce art. You have art to show. Your are the real artist”. That is exactly what I needed to hear. From that day forward, I painted my little heart out. I created. I figured out how to be in art shows. Started making prints and the rest…. well all I can say now is I am a Chicano Park Muralist. I have even received grants to create art.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Chicana Artist and Dj. My art journey started about 15 years ago. I have always been very creative. But when I started painting I started painting what I knew best. Plus size images, What I called body positive art. I painted silhouettes of bodies that were familiar to me. I painted women in sexy poses, with less clothes. I was fluffy & i was beautiful. I wanted to see more art with real shapes like mine. So i created art with images that looked like me. The first art show I was part of I entered my piece anonymous. Only the curator knew it was my piece, It received many reviews. I loved what people had to say about it, After that I was hooked, I love the thought of creating an image that lives in my mind, and seeing how other people connect with it, Weather they liked it or not, I believe that art opened other avenues of creative outlets for me. It helped me find my community in art and cultura. It found my path to Dj ing. I am also very much know for being a pretty awesome DJ. I love what I do, I put all my heart and soul into my art & music. Mudic has always been in my path. I started collecting vinyl when I was about 12. I would go every chance I could to the spring valley swap meet to get myself a new record when I was a teenager. I had a nice little collection and had added some here and there as I grew up. When the art community took me to a little community ran radio station, where I was able to volunteer. Then one day I was invited to play records. I definitely felt like I was on the right path. There truly is no other “JOB” that is so full-filing. I get hired to provide the sound track of what ever it is you are celebrating. That is such great feeling. I am so great full for the other DJS that have always encouraged me. I have a few that have truly inspired me from day one. My friend BUCKY, She a bad a*s Vinyl DJ. She taught me a lot and I learned. I did start off DJ ing Vinyl, Its just the best, collecting, connecting with other vinyl djs, Sharing your collection. I think my favorite thing about dJ ing vinyl is not one set is ever the same. I learned to play digitaly over Covid, and again thanks to my community around me. They encouraged me and I learned, I love music, I love art & I love my culture. I include all these elements in my crafts.
Honestly, I blame the red hair is what set me apart. I know that sounds funny but its true. Im kinda hard to forget…lol. I also think consistency is also something that set me apart. I love my community, I have always made it a fact to give back when ever I can, I SHOW UP and do what I am asked to do, on time and with a smile. If someone asks me to teach them about DJing I am always down. I love encouraging other women to DJ. I think if I can uplift and encourage other women to learn this craft, Its just a great feeling. Seriously music brings people together, I love that.
You have to understand I LOVE MUSIC, Love to dance, Ive always said, if I can’t play the music well I want to be on the dance floor. Life growing up wasn’t always easy, but one thing I know is… at the end of the day. If I can play some tunes, play them loud and drown away all the BS in this world with music… Im so down.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Oh my, the most rewarding in being a creative person is where my crafts have taken me. Just this past year my art took me to Mexico City, To La Esmeralda, the art University in Mexico City. My art is there, My art is hanging up on their walls. I was also able to DJ while I was there. You have to know my past to understand. I grew up in a broken family. Ive been a victim of domestic violence. My brother was shot and passed away very young. I’ve been shot. I’m not sure how I made it thru all my grief, but looking back, art & music have helped me thru alot of it. Im living a beautiful dream, The places and that art and music have taken me to, I never knew I could go. I used to say, Im just some one who snuck in to thru the back door, Im not sure I belong here. With educated people, in art museums. I never ever dreamed this life for myself, Maybe It was a dream my mom had for me, but art and music have just opened so many doors, They have taken me to other cities, countries to share my crafts.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
You know what, I don’t know much about resources. But all I can tell you, if you are an artist, be an artist, create, If you want to be part of something.. GO GET IT! I’ve always told my 2 boys Ramon & Yensi, do & be what ever you want in this life. But be the best at what ever you do. Don’t wait for someone to invite you, You know that saying “closed mouths don’t get fed. GO FEED YOURSELF, Paint, press play, show up for yourself, Show up for your community. If no one invites you, ask how you can help. Remember I wasn’t the artist in my family, But I’ve painted at Chicano Park, in Mexico City…. stick around, I am no where near being done, I want to encourage others to live their dreams…. one song at a time, one art piece at a time.
One more thing, I graduated at 24 years old Carrying my son on stage as I received my diploma. What I’m trying to say, no matter what age you are, if you have a dream, if you want to change careers. Go do it. This beautiful life we have, it has so much to offer. Be good to yourself.
