We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Betsy Seward a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Betsy, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
As the child of a natural entrepreneur, I inherited my father’s independent streak. Growing up in rural eastern Virginia and the coast a short drive away, it was easy to want to meld the two styles–country and coast. The relaxed comfort of soft tees with the rugged wear of country adventure, inspired me to take this as my vision for an apparel brand.
Betsy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started with only an e-commerce website, which quickly evolved into wholesale opportunities . Shortly after that we leased a space in a local mercantile venue with low overhead. This exposure led to more online sales. We hope to grow worldwide, online, as well as organically with the local demographic. ,
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being invited to meet with a big box store was exciting, but I did the research and realized that expanding too quickly is not always best. I would rather establish my brand on my own terms.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
We are in a local mercantile venue with many walk-ins and tourists. So, having an e-commerce presence allows for greater options and sizes.
