We recently connected with Betsy Lee and have shared our conversation below.
Betsy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve been fortunate to work on many meaningful projects: ones that I’m passionate about and better people’s lives. I founded and led a non-profit for 22 years. Our mission was to help people use the resources of their faith to deal with life’s problems. I enjoyed leading a non-profit, but I missed doing creative work on my own. I’m retired now and I’m free to do whatever I’d like. I’ve discovered that blogging is the perfect fit for where I am in life right now. I can use writing and photography to touch people’s lives through what matters most to me. My blog, “Be Still Moments,” offers readers a moment of calm in their busy lives and provides joy, hope and inspiration. One woman who read the blog was a new widow. She wrote, “I was just sitting here drinking a cup of coffee, wondering how I was going to put one foot in front of the other. This is just what I needed right now.” A friend of my daughter’s wrote, ““If I ever meet your mom, she’s getting a huge hug. Her words and biblical inspiration have been exactly what I needed the last few months.” These comments are hugely rewarding to me. Blogging is a way that I can make a difference in people’s lives while at the same time receiving a great deal of personal fulfillment.
Betsy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been fascinated by the creative process. Creating something out of nothing. Something brand new. The unknown doesn’t scare me; it excites me.
I’ve written 6 books and numerous magazine articles. My photography has been featured in various travel, lifestyle and business publications., For 22 years I founded and led Prayer Ventures, a non-profit to help people grow in their faith.
For the past 3 years I created a travel blog based on my travels around the world. I’ve been to 60 countries on 6 continents. I enjoy meeting new people and exploring different cultures.
This year I launched a new blog, “Be Still Moments,” that combines what I love most: writing, photography, travel and ministry. I’m really excited about what this space can do for people.
We live in a fast-paced society; our lives can feel like they are spinning out of control. We need a space to slow down, be still and regain our equilibrium. A safe place, a place that offers joy, hope and inspiration—beyond the negative news that weighs us down every day.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
When you think of creatives and entrepreneurs, you likely think of an individual. One person with a great idea. A visionary. And that is who each of us is, but in my creative endeavors I’ve also learned the value of teamwork to make ideas come to life.
On my creative journey I’”ve had to learn humility and an appreciation for others who have the skills I don’t have. I’ve had to learn how to build teams to get things done. In the non-profit world, you need more than talented staff and colleagues, you have to create networks within the community to implement ideas.
The good news is while you are finding and nurturing these contacts, you are also fostering new friendships. The creative partners I’ve worked with over the years have become lifelong friends.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I can think of several times that I was reduced to tears on my creative journey. This is one that comes to mind. It was when I was leading my non- profit. Charities are dependent on donations. Sometimes these come in in a timely manner; sometimes they don’t. I remember a board meeting where I had to report that we were out of money and I didn’t know if we could go forward. I literally collapsed to my knees out of frustration. The board members gathered around me, put hands on my shoulders, offered encouragement and prayed that we would find a way out of this crisis. We did, and I walked away strengthened with greater courage and confidence to handle the next crisis.
